Here it is, ladies! Are you ready to know the holy grail of secrets to summertime happiness? Well here you go...
How do you get a perfect bikini body? Put a bikini on your body.
I seriously need each and every one of you to know that you are beautiful, and no number on a scale or other person's opinion can change that. We are living in a world where every single one of us is judged on the daily, and summertime is certainly no exception. Actually, it's when the claws come out. There was a point in time where being skinny was frowned upon and the more curves you had, the better. Nowadays, models and non-models alike resort to unhealthy and extreme extents to obtain the "perfect bikini body." Girls around the world are starving themselves, exercising to the point of exhaustion, even crying themselves to sleep at night, hating themselves over the desire to please everyone else. Well, tell me, ladies... What ever happened to the desire to please ourselves?
Pop culture affects everyone. In today’s society, the media bombards people and groups of all sorts – teens, young girls, even adults. – with images, trends, and how they should look and act, especially that one. Gender stereotyping is often used in media to enhance character traits and create humorous situations. When stereotypes are overwhelmingly present in television shows, movies, social media, etc., it can be difficult to counter those behaviors. Pop culture can affect self-esteem, emotional expression, career options, and ultimately, self-acceptance. Stereotypes exist as generalizations within a culture, whether they existed in media or society first.
We live in a society where women are more or less sex objects. Men can go about their days shirtless, but exposing a female chest is considered provocative and inappropriate, but in reality, a female breast is existent for nourishment and reproduction. Women are consumed by a pop culture in a sense that they believe they have to be perfect and look like a photo-shopped girl in a magazine. There is so much pressure for women to look young from media platforms, which are only to grow over time as technology advances even more. But here is a little secret - even the girls on the covers of Sports Illustrated don't even look like the girls on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
I ask you to remember these two things when you're on the beach this summer:
1) Love the body you have and own it in that itsy bitsy teenie weenie black and white polka dot bikini, or whatever swimsuit you choose to show off your bod, because after all, you are absolutely stunning.
2) Don't you dare judge any single other girl on the beach for strutting her stuff in her swimsuit, because guess what? She had the courage to take off her coverup and show the world her flawed body, and that alone makes her beautiful.
