A Saver's Advice For Those Who Still Love To Spend

Money is harder to spend when you've earned it.

I remember why I got my first job all too well. When I was about 15 years old, I had absolutely atrocious spending habits. I didn't have any source of income so you would think that I would at least save some of my money - you would be wrong.

Looking back I didn't spend it on anything meaningful, but just things that I thought I wanted in the heat of the moment but didn't really use again.

I got hired at my current job in July of 2013 when I was 16 years old. It seems absolutely crazy to me that it has been this long already. I have learned so many things and have grown up a lot since then.

It also has shown me the value of keeping my money. I was working as many hours as I could while I was still in high school and began saving up for college. I had realized that there was the off-chance that I would end up going to a university instead of a community college like my parents had originally planned.

Come time to make my college decision, I did end up attending a university and I had never been happier that I had that money saved. It's a different feeling being an adult and having things that you need to save for.

This fall I am moving into my first apartment and I have been working a lot this summer to try and save up enough so I don't have to get a job while I am in school.

Also, I would like to note that as soon as I started working for my money I became someone who wanted to spend the least amount of money possible on something. I started thinking of that money as how many hours would I have to work to get this?

My advice to anyone who loves shopping and spending money is to think about if you will really need or want what you're buying when the moment is over. You may like something that you see in the store, but then after really thinking about it decide that you don't really need it. Besides, in my opinion, it is so much better to spend money on experiences than it is physical things. You will grow out of things, but memories are forever.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
