Working at a fast food place may not seem like an awful job, but I would be lying if I said I loved my job. There are rude customers who come in and, honestly, every day I work I know we will have one of those customers. I think that a quick guide on how to not be a rude customer anywhere is in order -- haha order because fast food -- no? OK, moving on:
1. Accept workers are humans, too
We make mistakes and we are sorry we got it wrong -- trust me we don't strive to make your day miserable. It is acceptable to be a little upset, we did mess up, but don't come up to the counter yelling and making a scene because we made a mistake we are happy to fix.
2. Summer is always a busy time, be patient
Do you ever have those days at work where you would love to be anywhere but work? Us too! Especially on those hot days when its 80-plus degrees outside and we are all around the fryers trying to make sure everyone is getting fed in a timely manner, and our hearts just aren't in it that day. Please don't be rude when we ask how it is outside because we want nothing more than to be outside.
3. Listen to the order when we read it back
Honestly, this is for your benefit. For two years, I have had to listen to myself say "Hi this is Ashton, how may I help you?" on a headset and I don't like hearing my voice as it is. So please if I am reading back your order, listen and correct it if it is wrong.
4. If we say we are out, we are out
To some, this is something that is simple to understand, but for others this is the most confusing thing. We have to cook things sometimes and sometimes we just run out. We have trucks come to supply us, but they don't come every day. We are sorry we ran out, but it happens.
5. Odds are we have been there awhile, and we want to go home
There is nothing better than going home after being on your feet for eight hours. When I look tired and it's just switching over to lunch I have probably been there since we opened or shortly after. I will try and be ask quick as possible, but bear with me.
6. We don't read minds, contrary to popular belief
When you say "A few medium drinks," how many drinks would you like and what drink do you want? When you say "put whatever on it," what does that mean? We strive to make the customer happy and we don't know what you want, so just tell us.
Honestly, just be patient and that will make everything go so much smoother. Everyone will be happy and the workers will feel better about themselves.
Sincerely,
A Fast Food Employee
