No one can say that they never felt incompetent, lacked meaning, and felt inferior to others. I’ve certainly struggled to have confidence in myself. Dealing with an inferiority complex is not uncommon for people. We all struggle to be charismatic, confident, and in control. Even though this problem can be persistent, it’s unnecessary and untrue. Christians, especially, don’t have an excuse to feel inferior. As a Christian I know that when this life perishes I have another one waiting for me in Heaven. What can be more empowering than having a secured relationship with the creator of the universe? For me, my faith in Jesus Christ has helped me to overcome my inferiority complex.
Inferiority complexes often stem from real or imaginary shortcomings in physical appearance, intelligence, education, and economic status. Writing to the Corinthians, Paul instructs the church not to be caught up in materialism. In 2 Corinthians 4:18 Paul said, “so we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” What Paul is saying here is not to be so focused on wealth, fame, and success. Paul tells us to deviate from such a focus, instead he commands us Christians to set our attention on what really matters, things like our relationship with Christ and others.
Furthermore, it can be found in the Bible that while teaching to the disciples, Jesus spoke about the same subject as Paul. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-21). That last sentence is the most important because wherever our main focus is, our passion is also there. Jesus’ desire for us is to have our relationship with him be our treasure. Truly doing this would eliminate all feelings of inferiority, since confidence in Christ is the highest form of confidence.
Now we aren’t emptied of talents in this life. We all have a purpose that God gives us. God equips us with different skills and gifts. None of these gifts are inferior or superior to each other. In 1 Corinthians Paul said, “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” No person according to Paul is better than another. Every believer is equal in God's eyes.
Life may distribute material belongings unequally, but God sent his son to die for everyone. God doesn’t give different levels of salvation, rather he opens the gates of Heaven to everyone who believes in him. Everyone may have different economic statuses, levels of intelligence, social status, and education, but the creator of all things sees everyone equally.
