How Music Has Helped Me And Others

Music is very powerful, and its power has done many great things for so many people. Music has created a voice for people, it has allowed people a place to fit in, and it has given people an outlet to just let go. Each person can find their own place in music and for me, punk music has given me that place.

To me, punk music has always seemed to give me and those alike a voice. The music is created by the people for the people, so you can bet that actual things will be talked about in the lyrics. Questions will be asked, solutions will be raised, and voices will be heard. To me a huge attention grabber has always been music about unity, unity of race, politics, and people of different backgrounds. This country has been divided and we need each others opinions and outlooks to survive. No one side holds the keys to a perfect society. Punk music is full of people who have been rejected, that are looking for a cure to the way in which our society lives. A-lot of punk music is constructive and hopes for a better world.

It has given me a place where I always feel at home. Take any two punks, a hardcore kid and a kid who listens to ska and they will have an instant bond. Although from two different sides of punk music, they both know what it is like to be silenced and be an outcast. Anytime I'm at a show or with someone who shares my interest in punk music, I feel at home. We all have that crowd or place that makes us feel at home and for me that home is punk music. The place where I can be myself

Punk music was also created as an outlet for aggression, in a more positive way than going out and fighting people in the streets. It chooses to accept rather than ignore the angsts of youth, and it created a positive and controlled way to vent those feelings, leaving the kid at a better place mentally than his friends who try to bottle up all their pains. Hectic yet controlled, pits offered a way for kids to be free and somewhat physical yet, unspoken codes that told people how to behave and how to look out for others within the chaos. The goal was not to hurt anyone but to get along in a chaotic way.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
