How Much It Costs To Be Beautiful

How Much It Costs To Be Beautiful
Doctor Todd Hobgood

It seems like the cost to be "beautiful" is constantly rising with the expectations of how women should look, dress, and be shaped. For the rest of this article, I will place quotations around the word beautiful, because what is "beautiful?" And can you buy it?

People spend hundreds of thousands of dollars hoping to be "beautiful." Is beauty a big butt? An hourglass shape? Long hair? A contoured face? Plumped lips? Long eyelashes? A flat stomach? A size five? A light skin tone?

Referring back to my question earlier, what is "beautiful?" If we can't define the word, then why are we spending thousands of dollars in search of it?

Some might say to be beautiful it costs the amount Kim Kardashian has spent to look the way she does. If beauty is what Kim Kardashian is, then let's add up how much it will cost for an average person to become "beautiful:" A Brazilian Butt Lift averages $8,000-$10,000, liposuction averages $2,971, lip injections average $467-$544 per injection, breast implants average $3,848, and Botox average $350-$500 per injection. This adds up to be a total of $15,636 (and this is on the low-end). This total does not include the cost of makeup, clothes, hair products, nails, and hair extensions. So is this how much it costs to be "beautiful?"

The answer is no. I say beauty is free. You hair, your makeup, your nails, your clothes, your butt, your breast, your skin tone: nothing on the outside makes you beautiful. Beauty is not purchased. Beauty comes from within. A pretty face will get old. An hourglass shape will dwindle. But a beautiful soul will never diminish.

1 Peter 3: 3-4 "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.4. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight."

It doesn't cost a cent to be beautiful. Confidence is free. Intelligence is free. Selflessness is free. Gentleness is free. Kindness is free. Quietness is free. Loyalty is free. Smiling is free. What encompasses a beautiful soul is not available on the sale rack.

God gave us a thing called "natural beauty." We are beautiful without the implants, injections, makeup, and weave. These things don't make you beautiful. Society makes it difficult for women to showcase their natural beauty. It's like natural beauty is not "a thing" anymore. I beg to differ. Below are pictures of women I believe who are "beautiful" naturally.

The women above are wearing no makeup, no stylish clothes, are of multiple shades of color, are of multiple body shapes, and most importantly, these women are all confident in their own skin. How much did they pay to look the way they do? It looks to me that they paid nothing at all.

(Side note: I am not against plastic surgery, makeup, or anything else listed in the article. Nor am I saying that any of the things listed are bad.)

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
