Is Your Chocoholism Supporting Child Slavery?

Where Are You Getting Your Chocolate From?

Have you ever wondered how your favorite chocolate comes to be, or who are the people behind making it possible for you to indulge? As I sat in class two weeks ago, I learned a lot about this. I can honestly say that I feel terrible for ever purchasing and eating certain chocolate brands, one of them being Hershey. As I put more thought into this, I realized that it really disgusts and pains me for consuming their products.

Hershey and Ghirardelli, among other brand companies, are the most unethical producers of everyone's favorite candy. What's so shocking about this is that people still buy their products, not knowing that people are suffering in order to produce their favorite candy bars.

I have put so much time into this and it saddens me to think that Hershey and other companies profit from forced child labor in West Africa. It's so ironic to think that those ads you see on TV are always encouraging you to purchase them for your loved ones during special occasions. What is even more ironic is that a Hershey kiss is supposed to represent an extra kiss for your loved ones. This is truly appalling to me, considering that Hershey is one of the biggest companies to violate human rights. Children are forced to work in order to help support their families. Knowing this, I vow to never eat any Hershey products again until Hershey agrees to join Fair Trade.

As the holiday is upon us, I ask for you to do the same. I do not stand with supporting child labor. I think that the worst part about buying products from these companies is that many consumers are unaware that they are supporting an endless cycle of abuse. If more people knew that every piece of delicious chocolate that you consume has the blood of innocent children within it, would that change anything? Children are being torn apart from their families and forced to work long hours just to make a profit for these companies. The brutality that children go through needs to come to an end, and you can help this happen by consuming Fair Trade products. Next time you think of purchasing Hershey products, please keep in mind that children as young as six are being forced to work extremely long hours for very low amounts of pay, sometimes less than $2 a day.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
