How Moving My Furniture Around Actually Changed My Life

Yes, I realize I have a lot of plants.

How Moving My Furniture Around Actually Changed My Life

I recently moved into a new apartment, and despite it looking gorgeous, it felt like an un-productive space. I’ve never been one for the concept of “feng shui” really, although I’ve always considered it logical and reasonable. A few weeks into my new place, I started to realize that I was barely cooking, eating mostly junk food, could never focus on my homework, and was sleeping poorly. I felt terrible, and despite looking around at a modern-gone-jungle-chic, aesthetically pleasing apartment, I felt completely out of my element. It didn't really make sense to me, because I tend to consider myself fairly conscious and healthy.

So, in a moment of frustration and boredom, I moved my desk. Now, in a 300 sqft apartment, moving a desk, while also moving a coffee table and a bed, turns into an incredible acrobatic Tetris game, involving surprising leaps and even more surprising discoveries at how much weight your furniture can hold. Especially in strange angles. Especially holding wine. Needless to say, I cancelled my gym membership and instead directed those funds towards an anger management class.

I’m kidding. Although it was hell for a hot minute there.

The point is, it was worth it. It was really, really worth it, and I recommend the activity to anyone feeling in a stump. Initially this article was going to be about ways to conquer writing block. Ironically, I only had to do one thing on my list before realizing that my writer’s block was gone. My desk is in a strange place, but I’m enticed to hang out there. Which means that I tend to do more work, and my desk stays cleaner because I’m always there. My kitchen is properly organized, and I’m finding myself cooking far more frequently, which is a segue to good health. Now that my desk is clean, I actually have a place to sit and eat, instead of awkwardly leaning against my kitchen counter, because my apartment is really that small. I cleared the center part of the room, lets call it my “living area,” where I had previously placed a coffee table, and instead put fake grass from Home Depot. I know it sounds crazy, but my floor, which had previously been dusty and unappealing, now looks like a forever pristine lawn. I’ve been doing yoga on it. I’ve been managing to fit yoga into my daily schedule. This may not be impressive to some, if not most, but yoga was one of those activities that I never managed to squeeze in, or to feel truly comfortable doing it in my space. Suddenly, it is not only plausible, it is enticing.

My final conclusory advice.

Make yourself inspired by your living space, and not only through the decor. Don't underestimate the power of potential. Create opportunities for yourself to want to do activities that you usually set aside, because once it’s appealing, you'd be surprised at how productive you can be.

The Battle Between College And My Mental Health

College isn't easy, and I'm afraid I'm not going to make it at the rate my mental health is going.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?

For the average 20-something, life moves pretty fast. You’ve got classes, friends, relationships, jobs, family, and whatever else we overcommit ourselves with. I probably should have learned to say no to adding more to my schedule a long time ago, but instead here are 11 things that can be more helpful than coffee.

Resting b***h face. Defined as a person, usually a girl, who naturally looks mean when her face is expressionless, without meaning to. Many of you suffer from this "condition." You are commonly asked what's wrong, when nothing is. What people don't know is that is just your facial expression. Here are some things they wish you knew.
