Over winter break, I was able to catch up on shows and YouTube videos that I forgot about during the semester, as one college student does. While watching a video, one of those skippable ads showed up; however, just before I was going to skip it, I saw that it was about this new movie called "In the Heights." I am glad I did not skip it.
While I did not previously know much about this musical, I did know that the creator of Hamilton, Lin Manuel-Miranda, was also responsible for creating and staring in the original Broadway cast of In the Heights. This led me to doing the most obvious thing you do if you hear of a new musical; listen to the whole soundtrack. I found that this musical has so many similarities with Hamilton, that I really grew an interest for it. In the Heights gained a new fan.
I believe that many people can relate in that movies help the whole entertainment industry. Movies help expose music and culture to a wide range of audiences that would have not experienced it before. Recent movies such as Cats, La La Land, and even Mary Poppins Returns have contributed to a growth in Broadway revenue and popularity.
I really hope this trend continues in the coming years to bring this genre of entertainment to more audiences across the world.
