Anyone who's ever watched How I Met Your Mother knows that Barney Stinson is portrayed as a bit of a "womanizer". But, what if this wasn't the case?
One fan tweeted this out:
"That moment when you realize that Barney Stinson was probably not as much of a jerk or a womanizer as he was portrayed to be, but that the story was narrated by future Ted, trying to get his children to approve of him dating Robin again, so future Ted had to make the man Robin married look like the bad guy in the story."
From a fan's perspective, I totally see where this is coming from. Ted and Barney were best friends, but there always was a little tension between them. It would make sense that Ted would kind of throw Barney under the bus so that his kids would get behind him dating Robin (Barney's ex wife) in the end.
When Neil Patrick Harris (the actor who plays Barney) was questioned about this, his response was "I think that that's very accurate. Given the story structure, and with [Ted] telling the story to his kids, everything was able to be overdrawn."
When asked, NPH even gave an example. In season five, the episode "The Rough Patch" gives a great example of Ted's over exaggerating. He claims in this episode that towards the end of Barney and Robin's relationship (the first time), Barney had gained 75 pounds, and Robin had started to lose her hair and look like an old woman, "There's the crazy things, like when Barney and Robin started dating, and they get tired of each other; in that episode, Barney had gained 75lb, and Robin had her hair falling out and had gaps between her teeth! So Ted's revisions of the characters are, for sure, proven."
In the end, Ted's exaggerations make his stories. We'll never know FOR SURE if they're true or not, but I personally believe that Barney is actually a womanizer, and Ted was always in love with Robin and would do anything to have her.
