How Legally Blonde Prepared Me For College

No doubt my favorite movie ever is Legally Blonde. It is the most adorable, comedic, yet inspiring film about a girl wanting to win back the love of her life (Warner) while learning who she really is and what she truly wants. I've decided to take some major lessons from the movie and apply them to my own upcoming college endeavors. Hopefully you can take something from the movie and/or these points as well!

1. Surround yourself with people like you. Elle Woods was part of the sorority Delta Nu. She received all the love, support, and care from each "sister" she could want. Greek life is a great way to make lifelong friendships as well as other clubs and intramural activities.

2. Don't listen to negative comments intended to hurt you. Vivian, teachers, many fellow students, Warner, and even Elle's parents doubted Elle and her abilities. Although it was very difficult to ignore the opposing comments, Elle persevered and proved who's boss by being the top of her class!

3. Get mad about your academics. When Elle finally realized being accepted into Harvard Law School wasn't enough to get Warner back, she did not quit. Instead, she actually went to the library to get books, bought a cute and colorful laptop, and studied harder than she had for the LSAT. Her determination to achieve, not just good, but excellent grades in her classes is a goal of mine.

4. Do not fully rely on a guy. As fun as it may be to have a cute boyfriend and dream of a fairytale wedding and marriage, more than likely some or most of that dream will not become reality. Elle put forth much effort to win back her 'cute boyfriend' who only wanted to have fun with her until Vivian came along. Luckily for Elle, she found the man she needed: Emmett Richmond. A woman focused on her education and career will attract a man who will help build, support, and truly love her.

5. When in doubt, get your nails done. Elle met one of her best friends, taught women to do the "Bend and Snap," and even received an inspiring compliment from one of her difficult professors all in a random nail studio.

6. You can achieve anything you set your mind on. Keep on keeping on. Never lose hope. You've got this.

7. Be you! Show the world you're not afraid of a challenge. Just be yourself. Elle smiled and said hello to everyone she came in contact with, no matter how many odd smirks and frowns she received in return. She slayed everyone with kindness and by graduation she was adored by everyone.

"Remembering that first impressions are not always correct, you must always have faith in people and most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself." (Elle Woods)

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
