How Islamophobia Is Affecting Our Youth

Aside from the many ways Donald Trump is a “bad hombre” (a direct quote from the candidate himself during debate 3), perhaps the worst quality about him is the fact that he has the power to influence so many people into thinking everything he says is correct without fact. Since Donald Trump began running for president, the number of hate groups in America has increased, including membership in the KKK. In an article by Jason Silverstein, he states that “the number of American extremist groups jumped 14% from 2014 — with nearly 1,900 active hate and “patriot” groups across the country.” Many sources are saying how trump is directly responsible for this increase. Yesterday I came across and article by Jorge Ramos titled "Hate Rising" where he and a few other reporters went under cover to get more information on these hate groups. In this article he stated, "The Southern Poverty Law Center estimates that the number of radical groups operating in the U.S. has grown from 784 in 2014 to 892 in 2015; and organizations affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan from 72 to 190." While visiting these groups, a few of the leaders blatantly told him they were superior to him because he was Hispanic and that he would have to leave the country soon. Many of these white supremacists even told Ramos that they feel safe to come out of hiding since Donald Trump said he would have all Hispanic's "go over the wall" (and insult I have been told often). Towards the end of last year, Trump called for a ban on Muslims coming into the country and then changed his policy to “extreme vetting” which is still unfair and unjust to Muslims in America. All of his hate speak about Muslims is taking a toll on the well being of Muslim youth. Many children are being bullied at school by their peers and even their teachers. Donna St.George from The Washington Post stated that, "nearly one-third of Muslim students in grades three through 12 said they had experienced insults or abuse at least once because of their faith." This is a shockingly high number but not a shocking statistic. Another statistic she mentions is that "many Muslim students have felt harassed, humiliated, bullied or abused by classmates during the past six months because of their Islamic faith; 10 percent felt a teacher or administrator had treated them unfairly during the past six months." Donald Trump is helping to influence people that discrimination is good and normal and how it is protecting people. The only thing discrimination does is to divide people and cultures. Saying all Muslims are a part of ISIS and are a problem is the same as saying all Christians are members of the KKK. The road goes both ways and the discrimination needs to stop. America was founded on individuality and freedom and it needs to remain a safe-haven for such.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
