Last Thursday at 10pm How to Get Away with Murder had its season three premiere. Since part of the pilot episode of season one was filmed here at Ursinus I have been a true follower ever since the beginning. During season one, waiting each week for the next episode to come out was the worst. Then during season two I was still waiting at the edge of my seat for each episode to premiere. But now with season three it begs the question are we still getting away with murder? After watching the first episode this season does look interesting but I definitely have some problems and concerns with this upcoming season. Now I am not saying I won’t excitedly wait for each episode every week because if this show is good at one thing it’s cliffhangers, but I am curious to see where this season will go and if it will actually be able to stack up with the first two seasons. Or will it follow the path of Prison Break were during the whole third season you are wondering “why am I still watching this show?”
My first issue, while it does appear that Frank will have a critical role in this season since he is on to Annalise stalking him (also Frank is not the type of person to just go down without a fight) I couldn’t help but notice that this season seems to be dropping season two like it was hot. Everyone is moving on from Sam’s death/murder and the Hapstall siblings are nowhere to be found. In fact the majority of the first episode was spent showing how everyone has moved on from the mayhem of the first two seasons. I was just hoping there would be a little more about Wes’s father and his shooting since that was the major cliffhanger from the season two finale. Hopefully because this was just the first episode and we had to recount for everyone's summer that our questions will be answered later.
Along with that, part of what made season two so interesting was how removed Wes was from everyone else. He was such a wildcard once he found out that Rebecca was murdered. Then in the final minutes of season two he witnessed his father’s death, was betrayed by Frank, and had little trust with Annalise. Then somehow by screaming with Annalise in the middle of the woods for a couple of minutes brings him right back to normal. Now in season three you would have never guessed that Wes was as mopey as he was last season and he original swagger is back. He nails his defense presentation in class and ends up being the first chair for a defense case, all without any struggle. I just would have hoped for more than just everything returning to business as usual, because we all know Wes had a traumatic season two and that should definitely play a role in this current season.
Thirdy, having Oliver and Connor break up was just totally pointless. First of all they were my favorite couple so now that they aren’t together I personally don’t know what I’m going to do. But more importantly since Annalise offered Oliver a job and Connor works for Annalise there is now going to be a lot of awkward moments between the two of them that just aren’t necessary. Since Oliver helped out with the case in the last season he is friends with everyone the team, so now there is going to be the awkward picking of sides. This whole break up is just providing a lot a relationship drama that is not needed in this show. Getting away with the murders provides plenty of drama on its own.
Then lastly, and this is probably my biggest problem with this season, I saw no sign of my favorite character from season one. Part of what made season one so good was that in the beginning they had the gifted talent of Caroline Shimrock, Ursinus class of 2016 in the show. Even just looking at the picture above she is standing right next to Annalise Keating so obviously she had a major role in the show. I think if this show has any hope of being good this season they need to bring Caroline back! But I also might be slightly biased.
I do have high hopes for this season don’t get me wrong. Part of what makes the show so good is that they show you the ending but slowly add more details as the season goes on. Plus there are so many questions to be answered like, who burned Annalise’s house and why? Who is dead in the last scene? And is Frank going to blow everyone’s cover that they worked so hard to make these past two seasons? It will definitely be an interesting season filled with many twists and turns and cliffhangers, but the real question is how will it stack up with the first two seasons.
