Summer is a special time when you finally get to do all those things on your bucket list that you normally don't have time for during the hectic school year. However, every day can't be an excitement-filled summer wonderland. I've found that summer is also filled with endless conversations with your friends going back and forth saying, "I don't know, what do you want to do today?" This is exactly how my evening started last night, so here are the ways my friend and I combated our summer boredom and now you can too.
After my friend Jean and I ate dinner, we realized that with the mix of crummy weather and our lingering Fourth of July hangovers we were in for a pretty boring summer night. With our energy and conversation topics nearly exhausted, we took to the Internet and various iPhone apps to give us random ideas to occupy our time, hoping that maybe, just maybe we could make a fun night out of it.
The first thing on the list: draw portraits of each other. Now I'd like to make a disclaimer, which will become obvious once you see the portraits we drew, that neither Jean nor I are artists. Please keep that in mind. We spent about six minutes on our masterpieces and this was the outcome:
Needless to say, we NAILED IT and spent the next 10 minutes laughing at the uncanny resemblances.
Activity number two was see who can make the best paper airplane. I only had card stock paper at my house, so the weight distribution was off. I would compare the planes' first flight to that of the Hindenburg. This activity was short lived.
Our third task was to write a poem or a song. We chose a poem. Here it is:
"Dreams Do Come True" by Jean & Shannon
You used to be my English essay, but now you're so much more.
You took your first flight, but then you hit the floor.
Two folds left, two folds right, and one down the middle.
You cured my boredom, so now my thumbs I no longer twiddle.
But our time together came to an end, and into the recycling bin you went.
It was fun while it lasted -- my time well spent.
But your adventure was not over, now you're something new.
You're now a cocktail napkin on the airline Jetblue.
Obviously, the previous activity had some influence on the theme of our poem. Personally, I think it is rather beautiful -- a story of triumph and rebirth.
For our fourth and final activity we decided to bake a cookie! It was a special cookie. And because Jean and I are silly, immature, sad excuses for adults, I cannot show you a picture of the cookie because we crafted it into a vulgar shape reminiscent of Squidward Tentacles or The Great Gonzo. Sorry.
The evening was random, spontaneous, full of laughter, and required minimal physical activity (always a plus when you're feeling lazy). I'd call it a definite success, and hopefully our random evening can inspire you to come up with new ways to cure your own summer boredom!
