Number three in the United States for best sports fans doesn't seem that impressive until you attend a Cleveland sports game. Having some of the best fans in the world surprises many considering the heartbreaks these players have put us through.
We know how to handle heartbreak.
LeBron James leaving the Cavaliers in 2010 and moving on to the Miami Heat will forever go down as the most heart-wrenching moment for Cleveland fans. Our king left us helpless and mad. But we welcomed him home in 2014 with open arms and fuzzy hearts (the only way Cleveland knows how).
We have experienced many close call heart attacks.
Lets start with the beloved 1980 team--arguably the most likable Cleveland Browns team ever to take the field. This season we would win game after game but with very close scores. Then in typical Cleveland fashion, the Browns had a chance on their last drive to defeat the Oakland Raiders in a game that is well known nationally as one of the coldest games ever. What's better than cold angry Browns fans!?
We haven’t seen the World Series in almost two decades.
The last time the Indians got a good look at the World Series was October 18, 1997, until they were defeated by the Marlins by four games to three games. Yet, somehow we Indians fans find ourselves packing up the stadium each night, especially on Fridays for $1 hot dogs.
We have spent numerous nights hearing players announce their retirements.
Jim Brown the 30 year-old fullback retired from the Cleveland Browns to pursue a career in motion picture in 1996. While on the team for nine years, Brown held the NFL record for both single season, and career rushing along with all time leader in rushing touchdowns and all-purpose yards. Finally, Jim Brown was the first player to reach the 100 rushing touchdown milestone. The fans went into an emotional stage after hearing of his departure.
The Cleveland Way hasn’t stopped us fans from still thinking we may pull off a win.
Now to the 2002 playoffs against the Pittsburgh Steelers: the Browns started off on the right foot all the way until the third quarter where the Steelers came back in the second from a 24-7 lead and ending up taking the W 36-33. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions for the Cleveland fans.
Although we have had our hearts gouged out by each team in Cleveland, and I'm not quite sure when the drought will end, us fans could never turn our backs on these teams. We stay loyal no matter how bad we lose, what player leaves us or even how many close-call heart attacks they put us through. To Cleveland!
