Last week, New York City hosted Fashion Week, in which designers had the opportunity to show what we should expect to see in upcoming lines. For some, fashion week is the biggest event of the year but for others, this week is nothing out of the ordinary. When asked, some people haven't even heard about Fashion Week. Has fashion become knowledge to only those who care?
For years, fashion has become less of an interest in everyday life and geared more towards those interested in the industry and who can afford to buy the designer pieces. What people may fail to realize is that fashion surrounds all of us, whether we acknowledge it or not.
Fashion is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as a popular way of dressing during a particular time or among a particular group of people. There are different kinds of fashion in the world and every person accociates themselves with a particular kind of dress. This is where style comes into play...
Merriam-Webster defines style as a particular way in which something is done, created, or performed. Each one of us have our own style, something that we feel comfortable wearing. We put our own spin on the current fashion and call it our style. This is one of the ways that we express ourselves, which is what fashion is meant to do.
Fashion isn't about one week during the year or about how much money someone spends. Fashion is about finding what feels comfortable and what you feel helps you best express yourself. Just because designers are sending their newest creations down the runway doesn't mean that you can't do the same each day when you decide what to wear and leave your house. You don't have to read Vogue to know fashion. It's time for the industry to reach beyond that.
