I think all freshmen can agree that finding a roommate before entering college is one of the most stressful and top things on your to-do list. Come April of your senior year, it turns into a Hunger Games on Facebook to pick a perfect stranger that will become the person you live with for an entire year. This seems like a very weird concept and sometimes even feels similar to online dating. Also, you never know how deceiving social media can be until you start the roommate search.
Your first roommate is someone you will always remember because the two of you experienced dorm life together - and there's nothing quite like dorm life. You adjust to sharing basic things like a fridge and TV, and working around each other's sleep schedules. A roommate is the person that sees you more than anyone else, at your very best and worst. You get the chance to create incredible memories together and have a close bond that is hard to find.
People warn against rooming with your best friend from high school if you end up at the same college, and even though that may be hard, it's true that it rarely ever works out. There will always be those nightmare stories about that crazy slob of a roommate, but after a few awkward Facebook chats you could just get lucky enough to truly find a best friend. I certainly found mine.
For a girl that was born and raised in a small southern beach town I didn't expect my freshman year roommate to be a total northerner from big New York city. (Opposites attract…?) So moving all the way to South Carolina was a huge adjustment for her…she had to get used to the idea of grits, hearing “y'all" everywhere, and best of all the warm weather, even in December. It didn't take long before I became acclimated to her Northern ways too.
I feel so thankful to have randomly found my best friend through Facebook who also happens to be the person I share a room with, and practically do everything with. While I admit I was a little freaked out when Moe brought seaweed on move in day, I'm so glad I found a roommate like her. I know I can always count on her to order burritos to the room at midnight and obsess over One Tree Hill with me.
Thanks Facebook!
