How Facebook Can Help You In College

The end of summer is near, and soon enough you'll be moving into your dorm, buying textbooks, and starting classes. It can be an overwhelming time, especially for incoming freshmen. You are about to start a new chapter in your life and meet hundreds of new people. Luckily, in our digital world, Facebook is one of the top used social media sites that college students use to meet each other and network. Sometimes colleges even make Facebook pages specifically for their students to learn about each other and communicate.

So how could you use your Facebook to make a good first impression? Here are some tips and tricks to help you become a college social butterfly.

Before you go:

  • Change your profile settings:
    • Update your intro to accurately reflect your new location and school to receive local events and groups that you may enjoy. Facebook will even let you know if one of your friends are going to an event by you!
    • Make sure your cover and profile photos are up-to-date and an accurate reflection of who you are.
  • Get a head start on meeting your classmates:
    • Join your school’s Accepted Class of 2020 Facebook Group.
    • Join your Freshman Dorm’s Facebook Group (or an off-campus housing Facebook group to help find people looking to sublet).
  • Get to know your new neighborhood:
    • Join Facebook Groups in your new city. This is the best way to find out about different events and activities going on in your new town to take advantage of off-campus happenings.

When you get there:

  • Stay in touch:
    • Organize your News Feed preferences to prioritize family and friends that are far away so you don’t miss a beat.
    • Share memorable experiences with the people you've met along the way using Facebook Live!
  • Build a professional network:
    • Join your school's Career Center/Alumni Facebook Group to begin looking for summer internships or jobs, and network with Alumni that are in your desired professional field.
  • Stay in the know:
    • Join Groups associated with the campus clubs and activities you join to meet new people interested in similar things.
    • Utilize Facebook’s recently launched Events Discover feature to find and enjoy local events both on and off campus.
    • Join your school’s Lost & Found Facebook Group - Help find lost water bottles, missing ID cards or jackets left in classrooms/the library/dining hall/parties, etc. and make connections along the way!
  • Show Leadership:
    • Create groups for your classes, a great way to collaborate on homework, class projects and study for exams.
    • Create groups for study abroad travel, make it easy to visit and meet up with friends while traveling.
    • Create Facebook Groups/Events for sporting events happening on campus.

Follow these steps and soon enough, you'll be making connections within your college campus.

Good luck and enjoy the next 4 exciting years of your life!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
