How My Dog Saved My Life
Kayla Mastracchio

I think people tend to take dogs for granted sometimes, you know like how special they really are and how much of a difference they can make in someone's life. My dog is my lifeline- he has gotten me through the lowest of the lows and has been there through the best days too and I can confidently say that he has saved my life. Ollie is my absolute best friend, my child, my therapist, and my comfort. If I didn't come home to that wagging tail and anxious excitement that he emits just through our picture window as I walk up to the door, I think I would be lost.

Pets have such power over their owners emotionally, they have their own personalities and quirks and they become a part of the family and I hate when people find it 'dramatic' when people get depressed who have lost a pet; because I can tell you right now when Ollie is gone I'm not going to know what to do with myself because it will be a hole that can't be filled- just like losing a family member. I can thank this dog for my life because without him I'm not sure I would still be here and I know that sounds grim, but on days that I felt so alone he was right there to remind me that he loves me and needs me and sometimes that's the reassurance that anyone needs.

I love Ollie with all of my heart and more and the bond we have is indescribable because he is a dog, but he is my dog and he will always be the one person who was always there without question, and not because he had to be but because he wanted to be and he shows that by making a point to cuddle with me and always be close to me- especially when he can sense that something is wrong.

I will never be embarrassed by my relationship with Ollie because he is my pride and joy. I will never be able to have a love for another pet like I do for him because he just has this way about him that shows how much he loves not only me, but everyone around him and I adore him even more for that.

Dogs are so special because in their eyes you are their world and they have nothing else to worry about but you, they really are the epitome of what every human wants as a best friend. As Josh Billings perfectly states:

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
