It can be an arduous task as a financially stretched college student to enjoy a week-long break that you won’t have the privilege of basking in once you graduate: Spring Break. After interviewing numerous college students at both local and out-of-state universities, I have devised several budget tips to make the most of you vacation!
1. Form a tight group of friends.
Splitting hotel costs between several people can decrease overall expenditure by more than half. Search for group rates, differentiate the costs among Airbnb, hostels, or bed and breakfasts. The larger the group, the more memorable your trip can be. Expand your horizons!
2. Anyone up for a stay-cation?
Opt for a road trip nearby by researching the big or small towns near you. Spend some time exploring your hometown by discovering new restaurants, museums, or concerts. Staying at home can reveal a lot more than just boredom; sometimes we need a little staycation to relax, and fall more in love with the place you call home. On the plus side, you can save more money!
3. Plan in advance!
If you haven’t booked your hotel by now, you might want to wait until next year to take a big Spring Break trip. Calculate the costs of your flight, accommodation, excursions, and any extra expenses such as food, clothing, and rental cars. Utilize websites like Groupon and RetailMeNot to find generous coupons or alerts for travel and dining! Saving up can be your mission this Spring Break!
4. Time to go alternative.
If your bank account still screams broke, talk to your family or friends about planning a trip up to a timeshare. Perhaps you can have more bonding time with family by planning some day trips. You might even have time to visit from old friends at another college!
Whilst Spring Break can be a downer for some, I encourage all my fellow ‘staycationers’ to do something spontaneous. Whether it be advocating for a cause you are passionate about, volunteering locally, or helping out with a fundraising effort, you have the ability to change your stagnant week into a positive (and resume-building) experience!
