"The deepness of God's love for us is greater than the depth of our understanding," says St. Paul. This is a revealing image of God's greatness and omnipotence. His love is infinite and beyond our comprehension. This is a reassuring truth for those who believe in God and the teachings of Jesus. But, how can we truly grasp his love?
Jesus' story of the prodigal reveals how deep God's love is for us. He tells the story of two sons. The younger is the baby of the family. He wastes his inheritance on women and wine. In Middle Eastern family culture, this was unheard of. The father gives his inheritance to the younger son because he loves his family. In contrast, the older brother tries to spend it on things that have no value, but he is a rule follower and the one who does not go against the rules.
God's love is unconditional and wide. In Ephesians 3:18, Paul mentions that God's love is perfect, deep, and boundless. He also uses the word "all the saints" to describe people in every dimension. In Revelation 8, the word "all the saints" appears eleven times. This wording speaks of the universal nature of God's love for mankind. It's hard to imagine the depth of God's love for us without understanding what that means.
The love of God goes far beyond words. His heavenly Father is constantly showing us that He loves us because of His love for us. His desire for oneness and love is greater than our ability to deserve. He is a father who runs out to meet his son even before he makes things right. His love for us is the same, whether we deserve it or not. Our heavenly Father longs for oneness with us.
The love of God is so great that He willingly gave His Son's life to pay for our sins. His love for us is so great, that God's Son suffered a painful death for our sake. We must be grateful for the sacrifice of his son for our sake. It is the deepest love in the world. But the love of God is even greater than this. It is the ultimate expression of His unending and awe-inspiring power.
The love of God cannot be understood or defined. In fact, it is not even possible to understand it. It is unknowable. However, God's love for us cannot be described by words. That's because we can't comprehend it, and it is impossible to know it. We can only experience it in our heart, through the love of others. This is the reason why Paul's prayer for the knowledge of Christ's love is so profound.
This love is so powerful that God is willing to give His life to us for as long as we will need Him. He is always with us, and that is the reason why we are loved by Him. This love is so great that it is a perfect and complete expression of God's character. It is the very essence of who we are. If we are loved by God, then we should have nothing to fear.
We may believe that God is the author of our lives and that he is angry and loves us. We may think that God is a harsh taskmaster or an angry judge, but God is not that way. He is the loving Father who made a beautiful world and loves all people equally. Consequently, we should feel no pain or regret when suffering. It is not that we're the cause of God's anger. But, the love of our Creator is not without cause.
The love of Christ for his people is almost beyond our comprehension. Paul used dimensional language in describing His love for the church in Ephesians 5:25. In other words, the love of Christ for His church is so vast and unfathomably deep that it seems to be beyond our comprehension. The words of this passage, along with the rest of the Bible, are a powerful reminder that God's love is not limited to the physical realm, but to the spiritual realm.
