How to Cope With College Homesickness

It's not as easy for some people to leave home.

Everyone goes through those periods of time when all they want to do is be home with their family; as a junior in college I go through the periods when I return back to college from a significant period of time at home. The ability to cope with home-sickness is a useful tool for college students who aren’t use to being away from their parents for a significant amount of time, Here are some tips to help you cope with homesickness.

1) Get Use to your New Location

Go out with your friends and explore this new location, before you know it people will consider you a local. Going out is a great way to familiars’ yourself with an area; along with getting you to get outside and not dwelling on missing your family.

2) Stay Connected to Your Family, but try to Avoid long/ frequent Visits

Going home often can make your homesickness worsen; you will be focused on the opportunities and the memories you are missing out on when you go home frequently. Stay connected to your family and friends from back home; these individual will help you cope and aide as a listening ear through these hard times.

3) Talk to Other Individuals Around You

These individuals are probably going through the same emotional roller-coaster as you, and could offer tips or a listening ear in times of need. These individual will need the same support and comforting during these emotional times.

4) Keep a Positive Attitude.

Positivity is a key component in overcoming homesickness; with a positive attitude you can overcome any obstacle. Don’t let a bad day or week ruin your whole college experience; make the best of each day and allow yourself to forgive yourself for the mistakes you make during the year.

5) Immerse yourself into the College experience with Your Friends

This will allow for like minded individuals to cope with the scary events in ways that will help you; these individuals know you best and will bring your homesickness to a smaller level when you’re having a great time doing an activity you enjoy.

Here is five tips to help you overcome your homesickness; college is about building memories that will last for a life time. So don’t forget to enjoy the day that will lead to the years before the real world kicks in.
