From kindergarten until our senior year in high school, we spend the entire school year anticipating summer vacation. During summer we don't have a single worry in the world. We choose to spend out days being carpooled around by our parents to the pool or the mall. We never wanted summer to end. I mean, what more could you want? You have absolutely nothing to do all day. You're biggest worry is whose house you and your group of friends will hang out at that day and who is going to drive. You truly believe there is no better way to spend your days than stuffing your face with junk food surrounded by your best friends.
Don't get me wrong, you're never too old to sit around and eat junk food with your best friends, but one thing I have noticed is summer changes once you're in college. I quickly learned this last summer when I chose to do absolutely nothing the entire summer. Let me tell you, this was a terrible decision. I was so bored all the time and I didn't have a job so I never had any money to do fun things with my friends (the ones that were in town at least). It was miserable.
Often times in college, you don't want it to be summer. Summer means you will no longer live ten feet away from your best friends and if you choose to go home for the summer, the friends who are still in contact with from high school choose not to go home. The best thing for a college student to do during the summer would be to be as productive as possible. This is the time when you should begin to build your resume until after you graduate and really start to prepare for the school year that is about to come. Get a job, take summer classes, apply for internships. I know this isn't anyone's ideal way to spend their summer vacation, but it is much more beneficial than sitting on the couch binge watching Netflix by yourself all day.
Now this doesn't mean don't lay by the pool with your friends and sit around and eat junk food, because that is definitely something that should be done over the summer, just not all day, every day. I am a firm believer in spending time with loved ones, and summer is the perfect time to do that. This summer I have received an internship and a part-time job, and I am so excited knowing that I will not be bored out of my mind all summer. On the other hand, I am also excited to have my weekends free so I do have time to lay around and do nothing and visit my family and friends back home. If you are a college student on summer vacation, take my advice and be as productive as possible this summer, I promise you won't regret it.
