I am not that much of a sports fan. The only times I truly cared about anything involving a ball were the Iron Bowl and standing on the sidelines at one of my high school's football games with a camera. Other than that, watching sports on TV is not the first thing I would put on. Especially soccer. I always thought the sport was pretty boring since it appeared that all the players did was run and kick the ball around.
When I got to college, that changed. Somehow sports became interesting to me, and it was not just because if I go to a certain amount of home games I get free shirt (although that did motivate me a little).
One night after my art class dismissed, I decided to go with my friends to a soccer game. We really went just so our friend could take photos for the yearbook, but it was still a good place for us to hang out. Plus, I needed a break from my classes to just chill out.
Or that is what I thought I was going to do.
A few minutes into the game, I was on my feet. I was cheering, screaming, becoming stressed about the fact there is this thing called "carding" when a player does something foul-worthy, and smiling at how awesome the Falcons were doing. I know absolutely nothing about sports, but I know a good game when I see one.
This game was incredible, and my school's team won! Listening to all of the back-and-forth dirty talk, watching fights nearly begin, and cheering along with my fellow Falcons made that night one of the best nights of my college experience.
Since going to that soccer game, I have been to two other home games, and we have won each time. There is even a freshman on the team who scored both of the goals for the team to win in the last game I went to.
Learning about soccer is great, especially when you learn about the game when the team you are cheering for wins. I heard a lot of people say that college is great for experiencing new things, and it is. However, I took that as experiencing through different subjects in classes or joining new clubs. I did not think that soccer would be one of those things.
