How College Has Changed Me, Part 1

Going away to college can have an extreme effect on you as a person.

College is a time to grow, find new interests and for the first time, be independent of your parents. This can lead to becoming a new person. In high school, you were surrounded by the same people and had the same activities to do. There was not much variety in what you did every day. This was both good and bad. Good, because you often feel comfortable in what you are doing. Bad, because it can often become too repetitive and you are often left looking for something else to do. College has expanded my horizons and let me grow as a person. This is how college has changed me.

The first thing you have to realize about college is that you get more freedom than you have ever seen. There are no parents here telling you to get up for class or telling you what time you have to be home for bed. It’s almost entirely up to you. This may seem like an amazing thing, but then again the freedom can go to your head. There have been nights that I have stayed up past 3 a.m., and the next morning I had no motivation to go to class, but I still went. The freedom that comes with college has helped me become a better with time management. I can now manage my time as to when I need to be in bed and when I need to get up to get to class on time. No longer do I have my mom waking me up to get to class on time, now it is totally up to me. Luckily, I have only missed three classes due to being sick. I would like to think that’s not too bad for a kid that just was introduced to this amount of freedom.

The second way that college has changed me is making me a better communicator. Starting out in college, I was initially shocked at how many people you would meet. The first week here I probably spoke to more than a thousand people. Obviously, I don't remember everyone’s name and hardly see half of them now, but it still helped to make me a better communicator. While talking to that many people, I had to find easier and simpler ways to get my message across in a short amount of time. Not only that, but I have become a better communicator through email. In college, if you need to talk to a professor then, most likely, the only way is through email. College has helped me become a better and more professional communicator with my professors.

Those are just two ways that college has helped to change me. I like to think that college has made me an overall better person. I do miss home and miss my

family, but I am loving every second of college and will continue to grow while at James Madison University. One day I would like to return home a more developed person because of college.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
