For those of you who don’t live under a rock, you may have noticed something quite interesting in the headlines this month: "Captain America." People absolutely cannot stop talking about him, and it is much deserved. After all, he is the best super hero of all time…right?
Disclaimer: SPOILERS AHEAD
Since the release of "Captain America: Civil War," the third Captain America film from Marvel studios, the film has earned a startling $942 million at the box office, shattering the expectations of the studio and viewers alike. To put it in perspective, the film is projected to ultimately earn about $1.2 billion while the second "Avengers" film made $1.4 billion; what does this mean? We most certainly will continue to see Cap and crew in the theaters again, but the chances of the "Captain America" series getting another installment seem much more likely with such a huge turn around.
On another note, "Captain America" has also been under fire as of the release of "Captain America: Steve Rogers issue #1," written by Nick Spencer. Hold onto your heads because you won’t believe this – after 75 years of being the truest Marvel hero, Steve Rogers has actually been a sleeper agent for Hydra all along.
For those of you who aren’t in the know on Marvel jargon, Hydra has been one of the leading villainous groups in the Marvel Comic Universe – as well as the "Captain America" films and the television show "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." – since 1965. Hydra is run by none other than Red Skull aka Johann Schmidt, portrayed by Hugo Weaving in the first "Captain America" film. Johann Schmidt is, in simplest terms, pure evil, often associated as one of Hitler’s many affiliates. Throughout the Marvel Comic World as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one thing reigns true: he is the absolute number one enemy of Steve Rogers, Captain America himself.
The Internet saw uproar at such a reveal, and Marvel Editor, Tom Brevoort did assure us that this is “actually Steve Rogers, not a duplicate or a clone or a robot or anything like that.”
When actor Chris Evans, who’s played the Captain in several films, heard the news, he even responded via twitter, saying: “Hydra?!?!? #sayitaintso”.
Writer Nick Spencer assures us that Steve Rogers’ Hydra arc is in it for the long run, so all fans can do now is wait it out. Some are hopeful that Sam Wilson, who at the same time is also known as Captain America – for non-comic readers, I’ll break it down: There are currently two Captain America’s in Marvels comic world – will take matters into his own hands and give us the Steve that we know and love back.
In less tense news, Captain America is also making his rounds across the interwebs in a more…progressive stance as fans worldwide are trending – made popular by Twitter, but also prominent on Facebook now as well - #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend.
Will fans get what they want? Will Steve Rogers get taken out in some badass scheme set in motion by Sam Wilson? Will we be getting a "Captain America 4"? Fans can only sit back and wait because it’s out of our hands.
What I do know is that we’re in for a wild ride, and I can’t wait to see what the Marvel Universe holds for us within the coming years.
