Here Is Exactly How I Broke The Sorority Girl Stereotype, Because We Don't Need Labels Holding Us Back

All the ways that Alpha Gamma Delta isn't your Hollywood movie sorority, and how I'm not a stereotypical Greek life girl.

Here Is Exactly How I Broke The Sorority Girl Stereotype, Because We Don't Need Labels Holding Us Back

The media is flooded with content based off of fake, over the top sorority life such as movies like House Bunny, Snapchat segments of drunk girls on Barstool, and other low-quality memes and posts.

However, none of that is the reality of Greek life. I am proud to be part of an organization that consists of all the good that those Greek letters represent. In movies, sorority houses are always these giant mansions with half-dressed college girls running around with perfect manicures and designer bags -that is FAR from the truth.

Our Alpha Gamma Delta house is a modest size, where seven of us pay rent to live, and all of us get to enjoy our cozy home together.

All of my sisters and I are beautiful women, but not Instagram models or basic white girls. We love to run around in our letters and leggings (usually from Target), go to class, the library, coffee runs, and campus events. The image of hot chicks tanning, lounging and partying all day every day is simply not the reality of it all. It's something so much better.

The fact that when I searched on YouTube "soro" and the first suggestion to come up was "sorority chants from hell" was... honestly hilarious. We don't do that. The closest my Alpha Gam sisters and I get to that nonsense is screaming our lungs out at home games for our Eagles.

What we actually do is serve our community with Meals on Wheels and Feeding America, host events to raise money to end hunger, and try to build a better community here on campus for everyone to feel at home. We're all so lucky to have found our home at Alpha Gamma Delta, and we want others to find their home too.

Whether that's in our house, in another sorority, with a club or different organization, or just with classmates and friends.

One major part of our AGD Purpose is "to cultivate an acquaintance with many whom I (we) meet" and to "cherish friendship with but a chosen few and to study the perfecting of those friendships".

The idea behind this is ultimately to create an environment of community all over campus and a sisterhood full of sincerity and fun. It's not all about the pictures, letter shirts, and the sorority title. As hilarious as the "sorority chants from hell" are, and as entertaining as "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" is, they are not accurate depictions of real Greek life.

We do love a good slumber party, but that's not our entire identity. With that being said (especially to my college people out there) try anything new. Go check out the club for your major, or a cultural organization that you want to learn about. Bring a friend to structured Greek life recruitment.

Join a music group on campus. There are so many opportunities out there available to you, full of people who want to be part of your gang. So I encourage you to add another chapter to your story and try something you haven't tried before. Have fun out there!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
