Earlier this year, I wrote a piece about the struggling Texas Rangers. To everybody's surprise, including mine, the Rangers are going to the playoffs as division champions. The Rangers clinched the division about an hour ago, and I still can't gather my thoughts. I am in shock—but at the same time, I am elated that the miracle Rangers have done the unthinkable.
In my previous article, I said that fake fans would show their faces when the team got good. I thought this would be next year, at the earliest. I did not think the Rangers would do anything this year, but I am glad to be wrong.
However, I was right about fake fans showing up. This entire week, I have seen people post on Facebook and Twitter about how the Rangers are going to the playoffs. Some of those people have been supporters all year, but most only started to care this week. In my article, I said fake fans would be more vocal than the loyal fans. This has been proven. The thing is—I don't care.
I don't care that fake fans only remember the high moments, because I know deep down that they'll be gone eventually. People have been texting me about how I deserve to celebrate because I never lost hope. Yes, my jobs revolve around the Rangers, but I am always a fan first. There are plenty of people like me who have been loyal, and today is for them.
I don't know what this team will do in the playoffs. They have a tough first matchup against Toronto, and it will be difficult to beat them. However, the Rangers proved that anything is possible. If they wind up winning it all this year, the fake fans will go absolutely crazy. Will that annoy the real fans? Yes. Will it keep us from celebrating? Absolutely not.
Congratulations to the Texas Rangers for proving everybody wrong. We all look forward to seeing what you can do in the playoffs, and always remember to never ever quit.
