Sorority life can be very intimidating. Some may say it's “cult-esque”, while others may say it's an unbreakable sisterhood. As a houseboy for Alpha Delta Pi, I have an inside perspective on this. I can undoubtedly see both sides of this argument as valid, but what it ultimately boils down to is that these girls deeply love each other, like a lot. Like so so much. These are just a few things I have noticed while working as a houseboy:
- A sister would literally jump off a bridge if it would benefit another. ADPi's national motto is “We live for each other." Whether it be constantly borrowing outfits (I am not joking when I say constantly) or signing each other up for a late plate, these girls would do anything for each other and that’s true love right there.
- Emotions run high in the house, and the girls are free to share them. I can truthfully mark off my bucket list just sitting at the table listening to problems and being a shoulder to cry on. This may seem intimidating to some (which it is), but also very fulfilling (which it also is). I willingly offer my male advice or a cheesy joke as consolation, and you would be surprised how often it is appreciated.
- Don’t be fooled by the typical “srat girls only eat three pieces of lettuce for every meal” crap. While eating healthy does occur frequently in the house, a night of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese and rolls really can hit the spot (God bless Chicken Finger Friday). I have seen a girl use ranch dressing as a sauce for pasta and to be completely honest, it looked great! Everybody loves to eat, even sorority girls, and if you hear otherwise you are being lied to.
- Fourth and finally, the girls are so appreciative of all of the work you do. I am so blessed to be surrounded by such positive and thankful girls. It is very common to have someone notice the work you are putting forth for the sorority and genuinely thank you for it. You are often rewarded in hugs or function dates, which definitely makes it all worthwhile.
Working in a sorority house can seem very intimidating to some. It is such a different work environment than any other job you could possibly have. The best part is genuinely making relationships with the girls and becoming invested in their lives and having them invest in yours. I could not be more thankful for the lovely ladies of the Delta Delta chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. You make my job so easy and worthwhile. The food and paycheck is just a bonus.
Some advice for any PNM’s in the future: Don’t be afraid that you have to be a “perfect” plastic mold of a sorority girl. These girls love originality and living truthfully. It is such a great organization that gives back to the community and invests in each other. #GoGreek because having a family away from home can make such a difference in your college experience
