One of the greatest debates, of maybe all of history: is a hot dog a sandwich?
Now, I've asked many of the world's greatest scholars to answer this question. My suitemates, my girlfriend, my parents, and, of course, myself. Overall, there was an overwhelming majority that...
A hot dog is a sandwich.
Now, I've heard both sides of the argument. I'll lay out the evidence/arguments for both sides of the case to let you decide for yourself.
It is a Sandwich:
Now, I feel as though most people have a very specific definition of what a sandwich is. When they think of a sandwich, they think of a ham and cheese, or a peanut butter and jelly. I mean, I'm guilty of this too. The stereotypical image of a sandwich is a cold cut between two pieces of bread with cheese, mustard, and lettuce. That is fine. However, when it comes down to it, what is the actual definition of a sandwich? Well, I'll give you this: a sandwich is literally something meant to eaten and which is placed between two slices of bread.
Based on this definition, I would absolutely define a hot dog as a sandwich, as would many of my cohorts. Additionally, we would go as far as to say that a hamburger is also a sandwich, but that is a different issue for a different time.
What else can one do with a sandwich?
Well, you can add condiments to it. This is also true with a hotdog. You can slice it into sections. Although this might be a sign of an emerging psychotic break if someone cutes their hotdog into halves, it is still possible, and therefore is evidence that it is a sandwich.
It is NOT a Sandwich:
Simply, they cannot wrap their minds around the fact that the definition of a sandwich is not limited to a ham and cheese, or a peanut butter and jelly. These people refuse to see the logic in the definition of a sandwich.
I know I said I was going to lay out both arguments here, but I actually could not think of any evidence to support anyone believing that a hot dog is not a sandwich, and neither could anyone else. So there you have it.
A hot dog is a sandwich. If you think otherwise, please find some evidence, and maybe you will be able to make a case for yourself.
