Health insurance seems like a breeze right? With all the options, commercials and unlimited access to health insurance, there’s no way anybody could be having a problem obtaining it right? Wrong… applying for health insurance is the most painful mile stones I have had to accomplish in my pre-adult years. It literally took me a whole year to be able to finally be awarded health insurance. I’m pretty sure due to the one-year horror story I had to go through to get health insurance, I swear I have developed a serious case of anxiety and have literally turned myself into a hypochondriac.
You want to know why health insurance is such a painful and horrifying experience? Here are the top five reasons why:
1. The Price
Good health insurance is so expensive! I literally had to look high and dry to find an affordable health care plan. Why is insurance so high? It’s like they’re trying to make it impossible for everyone to afford a good healthcare plan. I’m not trying to burn a hole through my pocket book, I’m trying to save money, yet be insured.
2. The Process of Enrollment
When I finally did find a health insurance plan that wouldn’t cause me to go bankrupt, the process of enrolling for it was one of the most painful, mind-boggling experiences I have ever gone through. From the 50 question questionnaire to the long invasive conversations, at the end of it all, I literally would be mentally exhausted. I understand the importance of making sure to ensure the person with the best match for health insurance, but my goodness, some of the questions were really too personal and just unnecessary. I should be able to give concrete information to form my plan without telling my whole life story.
3. The Lack of Coverage
While on my hunt to find a nice affordable healthcare plan, I kept running into problems with potential Mr. Rights. Each time I thought I found a good plan, it ended up having lack of coverage for the essential things you would need your insurance to pay for. For example, some health plans didn’t cover eye exams, glasses, dental appointments, surgery and the most important: prescriptions. What is the point of these health care companies creating such plans with so many holes in them? Health insurance is supposed to help ease the burden of medical expenses, not make it worse.
4. The Painful Process of Receiving Your Insurance Card
Even after enrolling into my healthcare plan, I am still waiting for my medical card to come in the mail. I applied two weeks ago, and they told me it should have been here in three to five business days. Then, when you call them, they just simply tell you to “keep waiting.” I find this answer quite annoying and just plain inadequate. People need their medical card, so they can be insured and able to go to the doctor. I still yet have been able to go to a doctor, because of this. Go figure.
5. The Customer Service
I don’t get why people who know they have no people skills apply for jobs that involve dealing with people. I also don’t get why people apply to jobs that they know it would be a thorn in their back instead of a pleasure. The customer service people I have had to deal with were mostly rude and snotty. Some of them were even racist. I just don’t understand why people treat other people like this. If someone is coming to you for help and information, you should help them with sincerity and kindness. Not with inhospitality and harshness.
We need to do better America. People who can’t afford these top health plans shouldn’t be forced to settle with half insurance, or have to go through the state to get insurance (Trust me, going through the state is a pain.) Everyone deserves access. If we America are so for the people, then let’s make sure we make life essentials things like health insurance be obtainable for the people.
