Although there are plenty of horror movies and thrillers that are enjoyable and entertaining to watch, there seem to be limited horror movies that are actually scary. While some movies are like this or are more just on the gory side, there are others that are truly terrifying.
It is somewhat unclear as to why people gain enjoyment from watching such horrendous creatures in their element. Some say that one may be seeking an adrenaline rush. Others say it distracts us from the fears and issues in our own lives. I
f you are like me, and oddly enjoy the thrill of movies so horrifying that will not only send chills up your spine but make you fear being alone in the dark, then check out these movies that will keep you fearfully on the edge of your seat.
1. 'The Grudge'
A nurse, Karen, is sent to Tokyo, Japan and is accompanied by a spirit called The Grudge. As she carries out her duties as a caregiver, she discovers a curse that haunts anyone who enters the house. Something about the disturbing pale figure of The Grudge, and even the sound she makes, still terrifies me to this day, especially since I first watched it as a child.
2. 'Insidious'
'Insidious' accounts a family haunted by demons and powerful forces as they attempt to save their son. With plenty of jump scares, supernatural events, and a suspenseful plot, 'Insidious' is one you can rewatch and still be terrified.
3. 'The Exorcist'
When a teenage girl begins to act unusual out of the blue, her parents attempt to get medical help. After this failed, they turn to a priest who performs an exorcism to extract the demon from her. This frightening movie has realistic characters and is known as one of the greatest horror movies of all time.
4. 'The Cabin in the Woods'
A group of college students take a vacation and stay at a cabin located in a remote area in the middle of the forest. They discover something surprising and unexpected in the basement. This movie is mixed with horror from the monstrous creatures and even some humor, especially from the fact that scientists are in complete control of the terror the college students experience.
5. 'The Orphanage'
'The Orphanage' is about a couple who raises their son in the orphanage in which the wife had grown up in, thinking it would be a positive experience for him. Their son claims to have an invisible friend and a haunted presence joins the family in the house. Creepy children and plenty of jump scares makes this a dark and petrifying film.
6. 'The Sinister'
'The Sinister' combines horror with drama and murder mystery. A family moves into a new house where previous murders occurred. Though it may sound like it, this is not your typical horror movie. Though graphic and occasionally violent, I would say 'The Sinister' is a well-made horror movie.
