Since it’s the month of October, I am going to kick off my first article with what I like to call, “12 Horror Films you should NOT watch after 8 pm.” These films are not ranked in any particular order, If you do not see your favorite horror film on this list, well that’s too bad! Let’s begin.
1. Kill List.
Now Kill List is one of those films that makes you reevaluate your own think process to, “what in the hell did I just watch?” type of feeling after the movie is finished. Not gonna lie to you, I actually said a prayer after this film because I didn’t know how to mentally process what I just watched. A lot of people haven’t heard of Kill List because it is an indie film made out of the UK.
The film is about a retired soldier named Jay who is talked into becoming a hitman with his best friend Gal, also a retired soldier. Since Jay is almost out of money he decides to take on this task. I will leave you with that little cliff hanger because I do not want to spoil the movie. If you want a film that has a slow and fast pace ,then you will like this film.
This is not your average horror film because it has elements of crime throughout. because it made me feel on edge afterwards.
2. House of the Devil (2009).
Let me tell you, my dad has never, ever, showed any fear while watching a horror movie, but even this film scared him. Until I was rewatching this film, while he was on the phone and he says, “Hang on a second, I am going to have to call you back.” I have talked to a lot of people about scary movies and it is rare for someone to know about "House of the Devil."
This film is about a young lady who gets a house sitting job from a very peculiar elderly couple. you have to pay attention the whole way through-- even if you have to pause or rewind the film. ). If you like psychological films and films from the 80s, "House of the Devil" will not disappoint.
3. High Tension (2003).
I asked people about their favorite horror film, and six people said “High Tension.” I remember watching this film in middle school and predicting the outcomes. I put "High Tension" on the list because people will be on the edge of their seat. This film was made in France, so you will be watching it in subtitles. The film starts off with Alexia, a young woman who is visiting the family friend of her friend Marie.
This visit seems innocent at first, but boy, things sure do get weird. Some guy in a mysterious truck is hunting people and, of course, he parks his car “in close proximity to” Marie’s house. Even though I could predict the outcomes of this film, I feel like most people will not know what is happening... I watched this movie without subtitles for the first half hour and still knew what was happening, so maybe you will too!If you want a well made, gory horror movie, then "High Tension" is perfect for you
4. V/H/S (2012).
Let’s be real, most people today are judgemental over point of view/ found footage films. I had no problem watching Cloverfield, Blair Witch, or Chronicle (all POV/found footage films), etc. etc., but of course, people have varying opinions about those films.
I remember watching a trailer for V/H/S and thinking to myself, “This just opened up a new genre of ideas ” for horror moviegoers. "V/HS" is a six-part story, all recorded on a video camcorder, about different events happening, not related, that is either paranormal or supernatural.
The “main” plot is about a group of thieves who have been given a lead from another party of people to find this “tape” in a house in the middle of nowhere. The thieves break in and find like what it seems to be like 10 tv’s strung up together and tapes everywhere.
Of course, they check out “some” of the tapes, the other five tapes, that are in the movie. "V/H/S" was able to make you feel scared by different themes of horror for each tape. If you have enjoyed the ABC’s of Death, REC, Grave Encounters 1&2, then "V/H/S" is a must!
5. Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).
Half of horror movies wouldn't even exist if it wasn’t for Tim Burton. Tim Burton is a genius when it comes to blending horror with other genres. I have never had a feeling of happiness and frightened at the same time while watching Nightmare before Christmas. I’m not going to explain the plot of Nightmare Before Christmas because you should have seen it by now. This instant classic made the list the year I was born, so for that, check it out!
6. The Shining (1980).
"The Shining" is the only movie that made me not want to go to sleep at night. Still till this day, I have to watch it during the day. Nothing has freaked me out more than watching the "The Shining." This isn’t the average jump scare like modern day films do today like every damn second.
The thing that is scary about "The Shining" are three essentials: the pacing, the acting, and the soundtrack. The music can go from relaxation to eerie in a split of a second. All three essentials work hand in hand with each other, which makes The Shining. The plot is about a family of three that win a trip to an isolated hotel and things are not what it seems.
7. War of the Worlds (2003).
There is something about Tom Cruise running that makes me either want to start cheering or begin laughing. In this case, cheering. "War of the Worlds" is a film about a family trying to survive and alien invasion. I remember seeing this with my older brother and afterwards, I ask if I could sleep in his bed with him. The way aliens are portrayed in the film is menacing. Think of militant but strategic aliens making an attack on earth in machines that look like tripods. What would you do?
8. The Conjuring Series (2013 & 2016).
James Wan is by far a mastermind of creating horror. Everything this guy has made is genius. When I found out that he actually help write American Horror Story, I lost my freaking mind. Both of the Conjuring movies have their own unique brand of horror.
Both movies are dealing with both ghosts and demons but are done so well, that both movies made the list (no, I didn’t spoil it for you). "The Conjuring" series are the only movies I've seen people walked out of because they were scared. Wan is a mastermind of illusions in his movies, which keeps people coming back from more.
9. Cannibal Holocaust (1980).
I have yet to see this film but when I get the chance, best bet I will check it out. I don’t think I am mentally, physically, or spiritually ready for that film. I am going to watch it this month. I put "Cannibal Holocaust" on the list because that is one film in particular that I hear a lot of people talk about.
10. Audition (1999).
Japanese horror has a place in my heart as probably the best way to deliver a scare possible. Japanese just knows how to deliver a scare better than many American movies.
I was extremely hesitant to watch "Audition" because I heard my friends talk about how intense it was. I remember watching it at a buddies sleepover; needless to say, that movie kept us up for another hour or so.
"Audition" is one of those movies where you low-key forget about and then the thought of it sneaks back up when you are about to fall asleep. It’s a foreign film, so the names might be tad bit confusing, but if you know the main character's name (which are literally three people) you should be fine.
11. Alien (1979).
Before Ridley Scott started sinking ship with this franchise, he made a masterpiece called "Alien." I always knew the Alien story and how it connected with Predator and such but I had never seen the true “Alien.” My parents told me stories of how they went to go watch it when it came out and were freaked out about the aliens.
Watching it as a teenager, I sure didn’t get that “feel” that my parents were talking about due to seeing so many things that has branched from "Alien." Things that intrigued me are the following: ghosts, aliens, and new material.
12. Event Horizon (1997).
I have recently seen "Event Horizon" and to my amaze, I am surprised that I haven’t seen it so sooner. Everybody has those films that they are like, “you know what, I’ll watch it later” type of thing. So I have been pushing "Event Horizon" for about ten years, telling people I’ve watched it, and having no clue on what it was about.
"Event Horizon" is a perfect blend of space and the unknown. No one knows what is in space. "Event Horizon" has a great cast: you have Morpheus, Grant from Jurassic Park, I mean what else would you want?
Bonus: Hellraiser (1987).
The cream of the crop, "Hellraiser." And no, I am not referring to all the other "Hellraisers’" after the second (which technically isn’t that bad). So this dates back to when I was a little kid when I went to the video store to pick out movies. I would always see the cover of "Hellraiser" and freak out. Now this was the early 2000s, so I was around 7 at this time.
Every Time I saw the pinhead, I would sprint down the aisle to try and find my mom. Long story short, last year, for the first time ever, Netflix had both "Hellraiser" and "Hellraiser 2." Indeed, I watched both at midnight and I have to say, for a late 80s movie, it made me cringe and close my eyes at times. I guess it took 17 years to finally watch a film that is only the length of an average Lifetime Movie Network Original Movie.
So there it is folks, I gave my list of 12 Horror Films you should NOT watch after 8 P.M. I am glad you’ve enjoyed it. Stay tuned for more articles!
