14 Things You Know To Be True If You Went To Hoquiam High School

It’s been five and a half years since I graduated from high school. Even though I still work at my alma mater from time to time now, the memories from high school have stayed in my head since I graduated. High school may not have been the best four years of our lives, but those of us who went to Hoquiam High School can all relate to these things!

1. You still know the words to the fight song.

It may also be the fight song for Washington State University, but when you hear that fanfare you still proudly clap along and cheer, cheer, cheer for Hoquiam High!

2. Whenever you go anywhere and someone asks you where you’re from, you have to explain where Hoquiam is.

“It’s kind of on the coast, right next to Aberdeen and about 20 or so minutes from Ocean Shores. It’s also about an hour southwest of Olympia.” Sometimes people will still be confused after this and you eventually give up.

3. The rivalry with Aberdeen still gets you a little riled up.

Whether you’re donating to the annual Food Ball competition or just crossing to the other side of Myrtle Street, you still feel the strength of the rivalry deep down in your soul.

4. You know how supportive the community is.

They love the sports teams, the band, and the arts! From donating money to their fundraisers to watching performances, the community loves to support all that the Hoquiam schools do.

5. You likely still remember things from Mr. Dawson’s Global Issues class.

And if your parents went to HHS, they do, too. I personally still remember his lesson about assumptions.

6. The excitement that comes from going to Olympic Stadium on a cold Friday night in the fall.

Even those of us who aren’t enthusiastic about football still get excited watching the boys play!

7. You still remember most of the cheers.

The moves to “Nebraska” still go through my head from time to time.

8. You still remember the teachers and staff members who helped you out the most.

You might be friends with some of them on Facebook, too!

9. Having the most fun with the best friends ever.

Even today, you may still be friends with some of these people! My best friend from high school is still my best friend today.

10. The sound of the band at every assembly, football game, parade, and basketball game.

They always played the most exciting songs.

11. Even if you weren’t necessarily friends with everyone, you still got along with most people.

Group activities were a great a way to befriend people you wouldn't normally talk to on a regular basis.

12. Trying (or not) to be on your best behavior in Mr. Skolrood’s classes.

Having to spin the wheel was either the scariest thing in the world or a challenge that intrigued you.

13. The feeling of accomplishment that came from finally graduating.

You may have had fun at HHS, but dang was it good to be leaving!

14. You swore for years that you’d leave Hoquiam as soon as you got the chance...

But no matter how far away you go, coming back reminds you of all the good times.

Go Grizzlies!

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

While this question trend can get annoying, there are a couple of pros to having RBF.

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.
