Hopes I Have For Myself In The Coming Year

There were some things I did right last year, but there are definitely some things that I could do better.

Hopes I Have For Myself In The Coming Year

In my last article, I wrote about some of the things I wish I would have known during my first year of college. As I read and reread that article, I realized that even now, those are things that I still don't do to the fullest of my abilities. As I begin my sophomore year, I continue to see the ways that I have changed and grown since my first year, but there are still some parts of me that I think could be better. So, in line with the same theme from last week, here are some of the things that I wish for myself in the coming year:

1. For God's sake, keep your room clean.

You live in a tiny dorm room. Even if you do live by yourself, that is no excuse for you to have your gross dirty clothes everywhere.

2. Stop making your mom do your laundry when you go home.

You are nineteen years old, and you are fully capable of using a washing machine. Your mom has better things to do than wash the clothes that you compiled over multiple weeks.

3. Actually use all of the organizational tools that you bought at the beginning of the year.

Seriously, you buy a new planner like once a month because you only fill out like one day of the last one and then lose it. Like if you used it, you probably wouldn't have to worry about losing it.

4. Stop eating horrible foods.

Just because your meal plan covers it doesn't mean you need to eat it. Also, please think about how much better you would feel if you didn't eat all that shitty food.

5. Continuing with that, don't make excuses to not go to the gym.

You like running, don't let all of the extreme jocks and crazy fit girls intimidate you from getting your butt to the gym.

6. STOP PROCRASTINATING.

You always do this, and then you are always mad at yourself for it. If you would do what you need to do at a decent time, you wouldn't have to panic about the damn assignment the day before it's due.

7. Don't be so judgmental of people.

I can tell you right now that it's probably the reason it's so hard to make friends. People are generally better than you think they are on your first impression of them. (Also I know that you won't be able to stop being completely judgmental, but at least try you jerk)

8. Get involved in, like, one thing.

I know you think you're too busy and too overwhelmed to join things, but you're not, and it's okay to step outside of your comfort zone every once in a while.

9. Don't spend money on stupid things.

I guarantee that you probably don't need that extra sweater or scarf, you already have like thirty of those.

10. Try to have a better opinion of yourself.

I know that it has been really easy to get down on yourself and just want to curl up in your bed and never come out, but you really are doing pretty well, so don't sweat the small stuff, and keep doing you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
