To all of those who observe the Lenten season, this one's for you.
Lent is the period of 40 days that represents Jesus' suffering and sacrifice by ascending into the desert. At its least, Lent is a time of reflection. It also pushes us to repent, engage in moderation and self- and spiritual-discipline.
Alright, you know the drill. But what is it that we do during this month and a half? We tend to "give up" something we really like or know that isn't good for us like candy or fast food. This is great and all because yes, those foods are not good for your body, but how much willpower is actually needed to do this? If it isn't a serious addiction, then most likely not much. I know we are only human and there's only so much we can do. But it takes true discipline and the desire to really see a change in one's self in order to make a difference.
There's been debate on how long it takes to form and/or break a habit. Previously, it was 21 days and now it's jumped to 66 days. Whatever the answer is scientifically doesn't matter; it's up to the individual. Now, 40 days is a relatively long while to do without something, so you are bound to create a distance from it. It's always good to start somewhere. If you're looking to lose weight, this is a great time to reach deep inside and grab that determination to finally do it. Or if you're an overall inconsistent individual, maybe now's the time to start keeping your word and follow through. However, we shouldn't treat Lent like just another chance to waste the promises we chose to make ourselves like we do every year on New Year's Eve. Lent is more than just talk.
I think instead of saying you're giving up so-and-so, maybe we should be saying I'm striving to be so-and-so. Instead of taking something away, add something better in it's place. Add a better listener to your repertoire, or a better husband or a better friend. Or maybe just work on being a better human being. That's what I'm doing. It encompasses a lot of things, but I already know what I need to work on to become a better me. Find that within you and act on it.
In light of the world we live in today, there are two qualities we all need to obtain: humility and tolerance. When something goes extremely well for us, what's the first thing we tend to do? Tell the world! "Hey guys, I just got a raise!" or "Sweet! I made a 100 on that test, y'all!" Even the slightest notion of bragging is not cool. Take that positive energy of yours and put it toward something meaningful. If you got the 100 on that test, go help out a fellow classmate who got a 70. Or if you got a raise, start setting aside money to buy your mom that painting set she's always wanted.
The importance of being tolerant in 2017 should be high on everyone's list of priorities (and for Lent). Judging another person is wrong. Period. Because on what basis are we judging them? We have no right at all to do so. The only being who has that right is the Lord. Open your mind and soul and you'll be amazed at the knowledge you will receive.
It's difficult to admit we need to work on ourselves. Even the best of us have something we're not proud of. But once we realize that we will only being doing ourselves a favor in the long run, we'll be much happier with who we are becoming. We all change into new version of ourselves each passing day, so put your money where your mouth is and start building a better you. And hey, what's a more convenient time to start than during this Lenten season with Jesus as motivation?
