A Resolution Revolution

Sick of making New Year's Resolutions you don't stick to? Here's a new idea!

A Resolution Revolution

Well, its the beginning of the end, folks! 2016 is almost in the books, and we're all turning a new leaf with high expectations for 2017. With the new year brings many "new beginnings" so to speak, and many of these new beginnings are brought about in the form of "New Year's Resolutions."

Personally, I have never been a fan of Resolutions. If we are honest with ourselves, we maybe stick with them for a month or two, and then we slowly fade back into our old habits. I've seen some of my best friends and family become so adamant about their new resolutions such as eating healthier and going to the gym twice a week. They stick with their newly formed habits for all of two weeks, and then find excuses not to go to the gym or find it easy to go through the McDonalds drive-through on the way home from work.

As humans, new beginnings excite us. We see it as an opportunity to start over, so to speak. So its no question as to why New Year's Resolution's are so appealing. However, I believe there is a better way to ring in the New Year than to make a list of Resolution's that will eventually die off as time goes on. Instead of making a list of Resolution's this year, I am making a list of "hopes" for 2017. Just to give you some insight as to what I mean, I am gong to share some of my "hopes for 2017" with you:

1. I hope I get the opportunity to meet new people.

2. I hope I get to love more.

3. I hope I get to help people more than I did in 2016.

4. I hope I make the Dean's list for both of the 2017 semesters.

5. I hope my family and friends are happy.

6. I hope that my family and friends are healthy.

7. I hope that I stay on the path God intended for me to be on.

8. I hope that I don't burn any bridges.

9. I hope for more.

10. I hope for a better life than I had in 2017.

Hope is such a strong force. Hope gives us the opportunity to do things we never thought we could. It helps us achieve the unachievable. Hope is such a strong entity that has helped so many great people in this world achieve their dreams. Without hope, we have nothing. Without hope, we are stuck. Stuck in a life with no progress and no movement.

So, while you're ticking down the final seconds of 2016, think about what you are hopeful for this new year. Are you hopeful for a new life? A new beginning? Because a little bit of hope might just help you along the way.

I hope you have a Happy New Year, and a long list of "hopes" to go along with it!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
