Who knew I would walk away from watching Hidden Figures and be so proud to be an African-American woman. Who knew I would have this inspiring hope that no matter what society tries to keep me from doing I will always prevail. Thank you to three women who had the encourage to continue to push forward despite society telling them their race, gender, and knowledge would never live up to standards. Thank you for pushing past all odds and giving me hope!
The movie "Hidden Figures" tells the untold story of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson who transcended gender, race, and professional boundaries. Giving them the ultimate place in U.S. history. The movie goes behind the scenes of the race to beat Russia from putting a man in space. However, it goes so much deeper than NASA. It is a calling to step up and take hold of the power that we as women and minorities hold. We have the power to do whatever we want despite the chains society tries to put on us. This is where we draw the line and we make our mark. Here are 3 reasons why "Hidden Figures" is the movie of our time...
1. It realistically depicts racism.
Sometimes in movies, it is easier to push racism under the rug and act like it did not or does not occur. We act like things have disappeared and everything is peaches and roses... well it is not. Hidden Figures does a perfect job of making sure all of it is pulled from under the rug and displayed for all to see.
All throughout the movie, we come face to face with the truth about racism and segregation. We also witness some of the same tension that is faced now with police officers. We see the pain that these situations hold and we see the strength that pushed them through. We see reality but we see hope as well.
2. It is timely.
In a time where racial tensions are so high and hate is so easily felt, this movie could not have come at a better time. It is a movie that shuts down segregation and shows advancements that shaped so many people's lives.
Sometimes it is easier to think these things happen so long ago and it is time to get over it... however, we can not pretend that these things do not still happen and will not continue to happen unless we have movies like this!
3. It gives an overwhelming sense of hope.
One day, I will be honored to take my kids to see this movie. I will be proud that they have a movie that will continue to impact generations for years to come. Because I have this hope that my kids will feel that they can do whatever they want, matter whose president, what the color of their skin is, what gender they are, or what society tells them they should do. Because I walked out that theater with tears in eyes. Hope in my heart and PROUD to be an African-American woman!
Thank you, ladies, for doing what others told you that you could not do. Thank you for fighting because now I get the chance to fight too!
