Hop off your couch and into the outdoors

Hop off your couch and into the outdoors

With summer time reaching its last month, you may have come to realize that you haven't done as much as you hoped you would. From spending most of your nights drinking away at White Trash or Happy Hour, theres still time to do some other things that are definitely more parent approved. For those who are wanting to feel more outdoorsy and adventurous this summer, this is the list for you.

1. Wakulla Springs

This is the easiest one to do as it is the closest to FSU's campus. Wakulla Springs is one of the deepest springs and offers both a place to see wildlife such as alligators, turtles, manatees, and birds, Wakulla also provides a fun place to cool down with swimming areas.

2. Suwannee River State Park

This destination is one of my favorites as it offers a quick hike through plenty of giant trees along the side of one of Florida's most beautiful rivers. There are five trails for you to hike, ranging from a quarter mile to 18 miles, Suwannee River State Park offers plenty of historic and natural views.

3. Providence Canyon

One of the most popular hiking places for students in Tallahassee, you've probably seen Providence Canyon on more than one Instagram post. Most easily described as a mini grand canyon this park offers multiple hiking trails and views that will most definitely leave you in a state of wonder. Pet friendly trails make this a fun adventure for you to enjoy not only with your drinking buds but your furry friends as well. Though one of the further hiking trails as this one is in Georgia, the drive is definitely worth the experience.

4. Bear Paw

For those who can't shake off the need to drink but want to still do something outdoors, Bear Paw offers you the best of both worlds. If a 2-3 hour float down a river in a giant tube is your forte, then Bear Paw offers you the best day drinking destination (they also provide cooler floats). This is a popular summer destination as you pay for the tube and then a shuttle picks you up at the very end of the river.

5. Alligator Point

Last but not least Alligator point offers a nice option for those who miss the beach but don't feel like driving hours and hours to get to those in your hometown. A quick 1 hour drive from Tallahassee and you can have the gulf right at your fingertips. With eight miles of quiet and sparse coastline you can spend the day or afternoon relaxing on the beach.

So pack your bathing suit or tennis shoes and drag your friends off of their couches and away from their Netflix and take a day trip to any one of these different locations!

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
