My Home Away From Home

The longer I live here, the more I love it.

My Home Away From Home

Home (n): the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household.

I have been away at school now for three years. At the end of each school year I become very upset knowing that I have to leave this place for three months. Three months in the big scheme of things is nothing, it goes by in the blink of an eye. Summer is said to be the best time of year when you can do so much and explore.

School for me has always been something I look forward to. I go to school a few weeks early for soccer pre-season, to be with 20 other girls playing the sport we love. I then move in with some of my best friends and enjoy the time I spend with them. Throughout the year I study and work and maintain the friendships I have. I always meet new people and create so many lasting memories that I cherish. Something about being at school, in the little city I love, is so rewarding.

Being only 45 minutes away from my childhood home is always nice, but living at school and being in the atmosphere of campus and friends, at times, takes precedence. I often find myself in my college town to go running or to go out to dinner. I make plans with friends who I don't see often in my little college town. I stop by campus in my free time just because I want to. I always find myself traveling here for reasons that could easily be accomplished by my childhood home. For some reason, I can't stay away from this place.

I have pondered about this long and hard to figure out why I have such an attachment to this place. I have done so much within these city limits that I can't even start to begin to pick out my favorite memory. I have made the best of friends here and met people that I know I will always be close with. I have accomplished so many personal goals that I can't help but smile when I think about it. I have grown so much here into the adult and soon to be professional that I want to become. I even notice the minuscule details of the local parks and downtown area, which never seize to amaze me with their beauty. The residents of this town are nothing but the most kind and respectful people. I can never seem to pick out something wrong or something I dislike about going to school here.

For me, I have two homes: my childhood home and my school. My school has a special place in many people's hearts and is something that they will forever love.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
