It's that time of year again: It's time for ABC's show "The Bachelor" to come back. If you are unfamiliar with this reality show it is when 30 grown women literally drop everything to go compete against other women for "The Bachelor's" heart. The season is always filled with drama, girl fights, and awkward two-on-one dates...oh and roses. The rose determines whether or not you stay on the show so it is basically everything, and girls will go crazy to get these roses.
Recently on the "The Bachelor" Facebook page, 30 pictures of the contestants with their ages and occupations were posted. These women have some interesting jobs that range from "aspiring dolphin trainer" to "law school graduate" and "unemployed nurse." When these images were posted on the page, all of the followers went crazy making sure their opinions were known. While I disagree with the women's decisions to drop their lives and go date a man with 29 other girls, I respect them for putting themselves out there.
While there were some nice comments about these women, a majority of the comments were degrading and disrespectful. People were judging these women and creating stereotypes based on their occupation or even their choice of shoes. For example, there was only one woman not wearing heels and someone automatically made the assumption that since she is not wearing heels she is a prude. One woman decided to wear a cropped off-the-shoulder lace top and people were calling her slutty. These women probably spent hours deciding how to do their hair, what pants to wear, and whether or not to tuck in their tops.
I almost wish the producers didn't post these images because now these women will go onto Facebook and see all these negative and judgemental comments. How do you think these women feel seeing every part of themselves being critiqued by the whole world? It definitely is not uplifting. They will go into the competition with beaten confidence and will begin questioning themselves.
While people will still judge these girls when the show starts, at least all negative comments are not all in one place for everyone including the women to see. Instead of pointing out everyone's flaws why don't we point out what we like about them?
