Homecoming In A Sorority House

The good, the bad, the ugly.

Homecoming In A Sorority House

Everyone knows that when you're a part of Greek life, or any other major organization on campus, weeks like Homecoming become exponentially more busy, chaotic and involved. There are events to plan and attend, competitions to be had, money to be raised and memories to be shared. Your life is one big jumbled mess of balancing work and fun and it's one of the greatest things you could be a part of.

For those of you who currently live or have ever lived in a sorority house, you know the struggle. Everything is quadrupled for you and this list of 15 things should speak to your soul and describe the 6 days of your life that is Homecoming in a chapter home.

1. You know where you can go to be alone. If you're one of the unfortunate souls who has midterms during this week, you have figured out the one spot where you can get some peace and quiet.

2. The place for peace and quiet is definitely not your room, though. Girls will be running in and out of the bathroom and every single closet on your floor while getting ready. I mean it's Toga themed and while you have the hair and makeup down you have to have the perfect toga & Becca makes the perfect togas. Wait where's Becca?!?!? Let's scream her name down the hall 10 times to find out.

3. The Facebook house page isn't used for serious comments or concerns, but rather it's blowing up with frantic questions and searches of costume pieces.

4. You know what else is blowing up? Your phone. So many texts asking for so many different things.

5. The bathroom counters are covered in straighteners, curling wands, makeup, makeup wipes, bobby pins, glitter, tulle... the list goes on and on.

6. And even though you'd think your room would be a little more organized with all of your stuff now in the bathroom, somehow a tornado has come through and thrown everything around. Do you care? Nah, not really.

7. If you want someone to walk to a social with, all you have to do is go to the kitchen ten minutes before it starts and suddenly the world shows up to greet you.

8. You find out who is a neat freak and who is the opposite. Shoutout to the homies that clean when the house could use a little extra care. (Or when the others get a little more careless.)

9. You appreciate even more the girls who help you get dressed and fix you up when everything's falling apart.

10. There's a recognizable group of "moms" that emerge. They're your go-to ladies when something goes wrong.

11. Those things usually tend to go wrong at 2 a.m. when you're walking back home and you realize that maybe going out wasn't the best decision with a mid-term tomorrow.

12. Every morning the house gets quieter and quieter as girls get more tired.

13. You start to not feel as bad about not dressing up for class because everyone that's leaving before you also just rolled out of bed.

14. Your bed becomes a safe-haven and you're not surprised when you wake up to realize one of your sisters is there with you and you fell asleep talking.

15. You become even closer to your sisters, even though you didn't think that was possible. You wouldn't trade your crazy life in this wonderful home for anything in the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
