Living in a place like Lynchburg, VA, you don’t really have a lot to do. A majority of my friends live in bigger cities with a variety of places to go or things to do such as Short Pump Town Center and Tyson’s corner. The have chain upon chain restaurant and just about every shop you could ask for. However, what Lynchburg doesn’t lack is its plethora of local favorite eateries. There is Shoemakers American Grille, Robin Alexander’s Bistro, The Depot Grill, The Neighbors Place, The Texas Inn and many more. Aside from these, my personal favorites include Moore’s Country Store, The Farm Basket, Market at Main, and Maylynn’s creamery.
I may be a little biased to Moore’s country store, but beyond that the place is really one you can feel at home. Moore’s is a family business that has been open for just over 90 years. Famous for their hot dogs, which comes with mustard, onions, slaw and topped with spicy chili, it is for sure a reason to give it a try. I have never been a huge fan of hot dogs, but every time I am home I have to stop by and grab one, they are delicious. Even though they are famous for these hot dogs they continue to offer a large variety of food options from fresh made salads, fried chicken, hamburgers, wraps and a homemade daily special offered every day. The food may be what brings you in the door, but the atmosphere and the staff will make you want to keep coming back.
The next local favorite of mine would be the Farm Basket; the Farm Basket is unique for the simple fact that it is mainly a shop. This shop carries anything from local wines and jewelry to housewares and gifts. In the back of this quaint shop is where the magic happens. Even though they have a rather small selection for food options, they really knock it out of the park with what they do offer. I always go for the smoked turkey and Brie sandwich, which comes with the BEST fig, jam and spring mix, you also can’t go wrong with their pimento cheese sandwiches! Shop for your friend’s and eat for yourself, you can’t go wrong with the Farm Basket!
If you’re looking for more of your typical sit down restaurant then the Market at Main is just for you. Settled on Main Street, downtown, the Market at Main is your one stop shop for any food you could possibly want with breakfast served all day, a large burgers, sandwiches and sides menu and a fully stocked bar, you are good to go. Some of the items I feel you can’t go wrong with are the sweet potato pancakes and the Fort Early Egg salad sandwich, with bacon of course. I also hear that the fried green tomatoes are real contenders. This place set’s itself apart by naming their food creations after local places, such as that Fort Early eggs salad, this only just adds on the atmosphere all the locals love.
Once you have shoved your face with all the best eats of Lynchburg, you have to stop by Maylynn’s for some ice cream. A trailer in the Boonsboro shopping center, this small place does not disappoint. Since many people wouldn’t want to sit outside in the winter to eat their ice cream, Maylynn’s is seasonal but that just gives me another reason to want to come home for the summer, the Peanut butter milkshakes or the sundae’s are for sure to brighten anyone’s night.
Though these are only four of the many qualities places that make the small city of Lynchburg, a great place to come, these are the four that simply make it home! If you’re ever visiting family, one of the four colleges and universities that reside here, or just passing through make sure to stop by one, or all of these great local eateries’.
