I love animated movies. I swear I’m still a child at heart. But it is very rare for me to come across a children’s animated movie that really touches me now-a-days. Sure they're cute, but they aren’t making much of an impression. If you ask me, movies these days are lacking.
I recently watched the movie "Home," staring Rihanna and Jim Parsons. I’m not saying that it was the best over all, but in a generation surrounded with movies about monsters, minions and other mindless creations this one rises above them all. Here’s three reasons why the movie Home is truly where my heart is.
1. It stars a young Barbadian girl
Tip’s her name and cuteness is her game; along with brains, bravery and determination, but first let's address her ethnicity. In a business full of Snow Whites, Cinderellas and Sleeping Beauties, it’s nice to see a smart female protagonist that isn’t white.
Even though Tip’s ethnicity is specific, her look is representative to many little girls. Tip’s character was so relatable because of the way she looked, and even if she doesn’t look like every little girl, she at least appeals to another demographic (one that isn’t presented with enough to relate to if you ask me).
2. It promotes the idea of being different than everyone surrounding you.
Jim Parsons voices Oh, an alien who is an outcast among his kind. Oh is happy go lucky and quirky, traits that are all too often stomped out and replaced with conformity within our schools and even some homes. His character expresses himself and has fun doing it and is a great role model for children of all ages.
3. It focuses on the idea of learning and accepting other people’s cultures.
A main theme throughout the movie is learning about another person’s culture. Tip and Oh are both very different, but in their travels together they learn about each other and find things that apply to them both. This is a good lesson for children to learn as well. Our nation is made up of so many cultures and promoting acceptance of another’s culture is crucial to create a better, more tolerant world for the next generation.
Hopefully "Home" is a peak into a trend about to hit the big screens in the near future, because movies like this one are quickly being added to the list of favorites for families all across the nation.
