There might not be a ton of draw to go to Upstate New York, but home is home, and there is nowhere would rather call home than Schenectady. Here are the top 5 reasons it feels so good to be back.
5. Driving
Whether it's driving around Shaker looking at Christmas lights or seeing just how fast your car can go down Rt. 7, there is nothing quite like driving around after being at school for months on end.
4. Church
I love the Masses at Villanova, but there is just something so special about getting all of my friends from home together on a Sunday morning, going to mass at St. Kateri's together, and hitting up Dunkin Donuts after. On a related note, party's at Fr. Bob never fail to bring old friends together.
3. Friends
I know this is true for all people, but seeing my friends from home, and having a few weeks where we can hang out together is just the best feeling. Driving around, going out for a meal, shopping, or just laying around all day are so nice to do without having to worry about any college stress.
2. Family
Again, I know I am not special in saying this, but coming home to see my mom, my dad, my brother, and my pets just really makes coming back home worth while. The dining halls at Villanova are great (in my opinion), but there is nothing more satisfying than eating my first home-cooked meal after a few months at school.
1. Stewart's
This may seem odd, but when I come home, the first stop after my own house will always be Stewart's. Anybody from Upstate New York knows what I'm talking about, and for everyone else, let me just try to explain. Stewart's is a convenience store/gas station/ice cream parlor with the absolute best ice cream ever. It's made from milk that comes from local farms and it just so happens that this milk is magical. You can get your ice cream hand scooped on a cone, in a dish, or a whole pint. You can get a milkshake or a sundae or just buy a whole gallon. It is a place where you can go, hang out, and have ice cream at anytime of the year. It is the place to go when you have no clue what else to do and when I'm at school, there is no greater struggle than not having 3 Stewart's within walking distance.
