1. Family members:
Before you even start packing up for the trip, you have to break down every family member... Down to the dog.
2. What to do when you walk in the door:
I don’t know about your family but my family is huggers. There aren’t any handshakes with this family, besides the men, shake their hand – firmly. When you walk in speak to everyone and hug them or shake hands.
3. Traditions:
Make sure they are aware of all traditions. It will be really awkward when everyone is around the table ready for prayer, and they’ve has already dived into the turkey.
4. Prayer:
During most holidays, families pray before eating. When it’s a big family the prayer might be longer than usual. So let them know to be ready to be taunted by food for about 5 minutes while you hear collective “Amen’s”, “yes Lord’s” and “Thank you’s”.
5. Your plate:
They will judge your plate. Just a warning.
6. After dinner:
Do not… I repeat do not fall asleep right after you eat. Socialize for a minimum of 30 minutes.
8. Goodbyes:
You guessed it! More hugs. Now that they’ve got to know you a bit, the hugs with my harder and longer, so be ready to get squeezed like a little kid by all the aunties.
May the turkey be ever in your favor!
