Back Home After The First Year Of College

It feels great to be back home. After the my first year of college, I am really glad to be back in the place I grew up. During the school year I was only able to visit home during the long breaks since I go to UCR and am from Livermore, about 45 minutes from San Francisco. The weather is so much nicer here than when I was in school. I left when the weather was in the 90s and when I came back home, it was 67. When I had to walk my dog in the morning it was 57. Because I was only able to visit home three times the whole school year, I made each visit significant. Summer break lets me appreciate my home even more and I get to see how it has changed in one year and how it hasn't. New construction has begun and really developed in my area since the last time I was here, but for the most part the town seems pretty much the same.

During college you may have made many different friends from many different places. After school ends, it sucks when you all have to go home for the summer. It was so fun. convenient, and easy to hit up your friends to hang out and walk over to their dorm room and chill. It was such a simple system but now its disrupted by summer break and all you want to do is kick it with your college homies. High school friends are great and if you were really close with your high school friends during that time, good for you. But seriously, college is typically the place where you find your future friends for life. You shared and made great memories with these friends. But now your back home and you miss being at college again. Yeah, classes suck, studying sucks, midterms suck, finals suck, but all the fun that comes with colleges is what you're missing. The partying, the friends, all the craziness and shenanigans that helped make college more bearable got left behind when you left for home.

But there are pros to being back home for a couple of months, such as being back with your high school friends, having your own bathroom, having your own laundry room, your own full size refrigerator, your own room. It's cool seeing your house and how it has changed or how it hasn't changed. Same goes with your high school friends. Just seeing how you have matured and changed versus the rest of your friends can be pretty surprising. The best is when all of your friends get together and tell stories of how their first year of college was like. All the wild stories and all the sad stories. It's nice to be back home and chatting it up with everyone but you still miss your college friends because they were the ones who you made those stories with. There are things you miss about home and things you miss about college, but it's all going to be OK because you'll be back in a couple of months.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.
