Dear Hollywood,
We need to talk. You see, lately, things haven't been going so great— in fact, I’ve felt this way for a long time. I wish I could say that “it’s not you, it’s me,” but oh man, it is definitely you.
To be quite frank, your treatment of sexual predators is disgusting. While Hollywood is comprised of mostly liberal values, it seems that this one, to not accept abusive jerks into your midst, is an exception.
A few examples:
Woody Allen. Oh boy. How in the hell is he still a thing? The first article about his deplorable behavior was published in 1992 when the allegations were brought to court by a pediatrician after examining Allen’s adopted daughter, seven-year-old Dylan. Since then, he has been nominated by you, the Academy, eight times. The fact that actors are even willing to work with him is beyond me. The fact that he is still celebrated and praised for his art… in the words of other teenagers, “I can’t even."
Now to those of you who defend him, I am genuinely curious as to what your reasoning is. Allen was in therapy for inappropriate behavior towards his adopted daughter before the allegations were brought to court. Sex abuse clinics, as well as the judge on the case, as well as three other adults who were present on the day in question, all corroborated that Dylan was in fact abused by Allen. Further proof— Allen refused to take a polygraph, a lie detection test, administered by the police (yet he took one that was conducted by someone by his legal team.)
Next on the list, and most recent, is Casey Affleck. Until yesterday, I wasn’t even aware of the allegations against him, which just goes to show how much it’s been avoided or forgotten about. The allegations stem from 2010, on the set of Affleck’s film, I’m Still Here, when two women on his crew were constantly harassed by Affleck and the rest of the coincidentally all-male crew. Affleck allegedly crawled into bed with one of the women while she was sleeping.
Another time, he also allegedly had sexual relations in the hotel room of the same women. The two women were immediately barraged with sexual advances and harassment since they stepped on set, and while Affleck was there and witnessed it, he, as the director, never confronted the issue.
The list just goes on and on. Roman Polanski, who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl! There’s photographic evidence that he took a picture of her topless. Bernardo Bertolucci, director of Last Tango in Paris, confessed that he had actor Marlon Brando rape his female costar to get an authentic reaction. John Travolta allegedly assaulted a male masseur. Bill Cosby… well, you know about Bill Cosby.
So yeah, I’m pissed. I can’t believe I’m writing an article about this. News flash: celebrities are people too, who are capable of rape, abuse, and harassment. While the law may not always be able to take action against sex offenders due to the statute of limitations and limited evidence, we the audience hold power. We can boycott movies affiliated with celebrities that have allegedly behaved in these manners. We cannot accept these people.
Hollywood, I am still madly, truly, and deeply in love with you. I still aspire to be in your midst one day. But some things have to change before we get together.
Make Hollywood, and consequently the rest of the world, a safer place.
