Happy New Year, here's to hoping 2017 will be less of a shit show than 2016 was.
On the heels of the new year, one individual decided to welcome 2017 with a prank. The vandal, whose identity is currently unknown but who police believe to be a man, vandalized the iconic Hollywood sign to read "Hollyweed." Perhaps the prank was intended as a salute to the legalization of recreational marijuana use in California back in November, but who knows?
The vandal made use of tarps to change to O's in the sign to E's, a trick that is not completely original: in fact, the same exact prank was carried out back in 1976. The most recent "Hollyweed" sign remained until around 11 AM on January 1 when authorities took down the tarps that were used to change the letters.
As previously mentioned, the vandal responsible for the "Hollyweed" prank is of yet unidentified: surveillance cameras caught him in the act between midnight and 2 AM local time, but due to the dark and the rain, police were unable to make out his race or height. Seeing as the sensors at the sign that trigger an alarm for the police were not set off, it is highly likely that the responsible individual came from behind the sign, evidently aware that the sensors are only in certain areas of the letters and are thus possible to avoid. The culprit most likely knew of the road behind the sign, which is accessible to the public by foot and car.
Whoever the responsible party is, I'd like to thank them for starting us off to a new year with a laugh.
