Hollywood Corners, a unique and historic landmark, was recently renovated from the inside and out last year. The 1920s gas station in the middle of nowhere was run down, but was revived by famous country musician Toby Keith, who grew up near Hollywood Corners and wanted to bring it back for sentimental reasons.
Joey Hampton, the general manager and partial owner of Hollywood Corners, has led the successful business for about eight months now. He grew up visiting the gas station as a child with his uncle Toby Keith. They both work together to manage the family business their way.
“It’s a family thing,” said Hamptons, “so it’s kind of nice that we keep it within the family.”
The fairly new establishment has a laid-back, sit-by-the-fire kind of atmosphere, according to Hampton. There’s no need for anyone to worry about being rushed or hurried to leave. They definitely want to provide a unique and relaxing experience for their customers.
“We’re never going to rush anyone out of their seats,” said Hampton. “We want people to relax.”
They want to bring in diverse customers ranging from business professionals to college students and families with children. Hampton’s ideal vision for Hollywood Corners is to play a strong role among the Norman community by catering to every individual, regardless of age.
“I want to make an atmosphere that’s unique for all ages,” said Hampton. “I want anybody and everybody to come to Hollywood Corners.”
Although the “deli of the country” is not around too many other businesses, the establishment offers many perks such as free WiFi, a small convenience store with a gas station, 100 octane gas for motorcycles and sports cars, TVs on the front and back porch, and acoustic music sets for local musicians to showcase their talent for guests enjoying the food. Although the majority of the music played is described as cafe music, they are also open to soul, jazz, blues, and soft rock acts to entertain their non-subjective crowd.
The deli has a lengthy history of celebrities and other notable visitors. The late James Garner, a famous actor from Norman, used to work pumping gas at Hollywood Corners. It was once rumored that the infamous duo, Bonnie and Clyde stayed the night nearby since Bonnie supposedly had family from Little Axe. Some of the most recent notable guests include OU Men’s basketball coach, Lon Kruger, former head OU football coach Barry Switzer and, of course, country artist Toby Keith.
The significance of Hollywood Corners means more to Hampton than anyone will ever know. His family serves as the overall motivation for the success of the business.
“I do this for my wife and kids,” said Hampton. “I want to make my own family happy.”
Hampton’s grandparents also used to run a store similar to Hollywood Corners. One can find memorabilia throughout the establishment to honor and commemorate his grandparents’ legacy.
